The best week of my long life so far. Wonderful hotel. Can't believe the standard of the hotels in Egypt. They put the UK to shame. The staff (and ALL Egyptians we met) were beautiful people. Hotel couldn't do enough for us. Everywhere so clean.
Absolutely fantastic - Excellent Service

I have no complaints about the service received here in the least, the effort put in by all staff was wonderful.

This was a scuba diving holiday for us and so we left early and came back late most days, house keeping were great and worked around my needs with my towels replaced daily even though we were back outside of normal hours. Reception staff very friendly and eager to help and helped to arrange a little something special for the birthday in our group.

Pool staff were great and the bar staff by the pool were superb and even made sure they had extra strawberry's when they saw my disapointment when they run out out strawberry kiss non alcholic cocktail.

Food here was excellent with such a variety I am a picky earter and even I was satified, the buffett selections were great.

One thing to note if you don't ask you don't get, staff will help but you need to speak to them.
One of the best holidays that I have ever had.
Our group was over 20 people and there were no complaints from any of us!!

I look forward to my next visit I will be coming back for sure.

When we arrived at the hotel I was shocked on the size as it is so big the staff were so helpful and kind. The service was excellent everything was very clean and tidy not much night life but its ten minutes in a taxi to the town so wasn't a problem. The restaurants were lovely again all the staff were brilliant. The lobby bars were nice as there was entertainment in the evenings and the waiters standard of service was so good I have nothing bad to say about the hotel or holiday as it was perfect and can't wait to go back in six months!

We stayed for two weeks and had a fantastic time. Spent most of our time in the hotel due to lack of local amenities. We had a 2 year old as well and he enjoyed all the pools on offer.
The buffets were something else and the choice was amazing. Staff were extremely friendly around the pool, but don't expect much out of the reception or housekeeping if youo raise issues with them. Overall a lovely hotel, not much locally but that did not spoil our honeymoon.
Such a great surprise

The transfer to the hotel was only 10 minutes and when we got there we were really impressed. The service was friendly and curteous. Our room ( a Junior suite i think) was about 40 foot long with an added balcony. We saw a door open, to find another room almost as large with another covered balcony overlooking the pool. The food was fantastic. Soups were delicious. We were able to use the hotel bus to go and visit a local town which returned us 3 hours later for free. The resorts sister hotel was equally as good and just across the road. They had lovely gardens which led to the beach. All facilities were free.
Try the ice creams...and the lattes .... Mixed nationalities...fine... Trips out - easy to organise... Room serviced twice a day...Only negative really...but its part of their life - get used to being hassled to buy outside the confines of the hotel.

Great Weather

from helenf01
Just got back from The Grand Resort, Hurghada.
The hotel was lovely & for a change looked like the brochure.Mainly Brits & German clientel.
It was a little dark inside but so what! The rooms were roomy & had a nice balcony/ patio area looking over the pool area. Bathroom ok. As others have said we Brits are put on the ground floor but no problem.
The food at the buffet was varied enough. Breakfast you can have anything from cereal to ham & cheese to omelette to fruit to sausagea & scrambled egg (their version) but all very edible. Beware the freshly squeezed orange juice they bring round, it's lovely but extra£!
We ate in the 2 other restaurants; Nigra for the Egyptian food & entertainment; lovely & relaxed with music & belly dancer & not expensive (£E170)for 4 course meal. Ate at Nigma on last night some options on menu are included in Half board option. We had lobster not bad & only £E85 each. Overly attentive service but nice. The main buffet restaurant is busy between 6.30 & 8pm & it would have been nice if they had shown us to a table instead of wandering round playing musical tables! They even tried to seat us with a couple we didn't know!
Entertainment in the lobby is ok varies from magic show, acrobats, snake man to show girls(!) There is also entertainment in the mall shopping area every evening which is quite good although mimed! But they try Moulin Rouge, Cats, Blues Brothers, Rocky Horror etc!
The bars in this shopping area are cheaper than hotel (hotel bar Luxor lager; which is very nice £E22 JazzBar £E13) but of course you can't add it to your room bill like you do in the hotel.
Shopping is fun & I felt safer in the mall bit but you can still barter for some stuff. Cigarettes are so cheap! Try the local Cleopatras £E5 a packet (yes the equivilant of 50p!!!)
You also get to use the facilities of the sister hotel Grand Hotel across the road. We didn't but others sais they were very good. And the beach is nice.
Did a couple of trips with our tour operator;
City tour & shopping which was interesting; perfume shop, papyrus shop, silver & gold shop, new & old areas of Hurghada (Sekalla & Dahar)& a bazaar Tshirt shop & a leather shop.
Also did Cairo by air.£185!!!! 5am pick up. It's a long day but a good day you see lots & have enough free time where you need it.
I thought this hotel was great. The area is still developing but you don't see that from your hotel. The weather was great a bit windy on some days but cooling!
7 or 10 nights was long enough unless you make an effort to do stuff but for a "fly & Flop" holiday it was perfect. I would go back again.

Amazing hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I returned from the Grand Resort on 20/01/2005 and had the most amazing time.

I have previously read all of the reviews and found most of them helpful, so thought I would try to answer all of the questions I would have liked answered.

The hotel itself is fantastic, magical pools at night, lots of seating areas comfortable sofas to mill about in tea/coffee ice-cream, fountains, a very nice small bar by reception (£2 bottle beer/£1.80 local spirits suggest you stick with these as could get expensive £4.50 imported spirits and cocktails, great atmosphere all round.

The evening entertainment is really good, Show numbers, acrobates, spinning man (has to be seen to be believed)we are in our 30s and never seen anything like it, there is however a great Ministry of Sound if you fancy clubbing (ask for Bubas beach) it is on the beach!!

The staff are all men and very helpful. We never had any pressure to leave tips although most of their wages are made up by these so £1/10 egyption is about appropriate.

The rooms are excellent we had booked a delux room and were upgraded to a junior suite (shift it off the coach and get to the front of the que), it was the largest room I have ever stayed in (1122), 7ft by 7ft bed, double balcony, walk in wardrobe, if english you will be given a ground floor room due to health and safety over balcony hights - this is a good idea if you have children anyway, a beach bag and towels are provided and changed every day so don't bother taking. TV 2 news channels and 1 english non-stop film channel, all the others are German. I did see the normal rooms as well and these are also large and very well presented.

Food - I don't know where to start, I have never seen such choice before at least 10 diferent things every night, stews, curry, shepards pie, chicken in white sauce, Beef tenderloin in gravy, a diffrent griddle meat every night duck, chicken, lamb, beef not to mention pasta, rice, veg dishes, noddle bar outside, fish bar-b-que, seabass, squid etc. The salad bar is a bit German based (pickled veg)but always fresh salad, cold pastas, fresh fruit/ orange juice etc. There are also about 6 other restaurants which can be booked at reception. Chinese/Steak house/Italian, Indian all very cheap, Deserts you just have to see for yourself.

I could see that for fussy kids or people who only eat chips with everything this could be a bit of a problem, but you should be able to find something every night.

The development is very, very safe there are security guards on every corner who are very polite, the bank is across the road and has a guard at all times. Or exchange money at the hotel.

A taxi from the airport should cost aout £3 or 30 Egyptian, they will try to charge you a lot more and it can be very intimidating when you first get out of the airport if you are worried get the rep to help you. As the other comments say the minibuses can be either a bus or a cab diffrence is 20p or £2 and they will try to rip you off, everyone gets caught out but it is just best to keep it in perspective and treat it as part of the experience.

The beach is great, with wind breakers or the staff will make them out of sunbeds for you. It can be a bit winds but not too cold (it was Jan.)You can get away with sunbathing topless but be respectful, no walking around or swimming, the beach is quite private and you will not be bothered by anyone - food on the beach is also great.

Trips - You must do the Quad biking/visit to the bedouin camp, camal ride and food all for £10 each, we also did a snorklin boat trip, two lots of snorklin and lunch then stop off at an island to sun bath.

All I can say is that we had a wonderful time, we did not have children, but if I did I would not hesitate in taking them there, the desert and mountains are stunning and the people go all out to help you.

Where do the knockers come from?

What do they expect for their money?
For the same cost as one night at a Gatwick airport hotel (no breakfast) we had a weeks half board in an architectural gem of a hotel with good, food good accommodation, entertainment and perfect weather. We stayed for 4 weeks and enjoyed every minute. the beach facilities at the sister hotel over the road were very good the staff at both hotels were helpful and friendly and we enjoyed our trips out.
we stayed 25/11/05 to 23/11/05

Fantastic Holiday

from westchez3
I stayed for two weeks at the Grand Resort, with my family and friends.

The hotel was fabulous very clean and the staff were excellent they can't do enough for you. At times I would agree that the staff on the reception desk are impatient and a time were a bit rude to us, I think they are not used to having to answer to a woman. But on the whole this is cultural and 99% of the time there was no problem with the reception, you really don't need to speak to them until you are checking out.

I used the laundry facilities on holiday, and my clothes came back like brand new, the pool areas and loungers were fab, never had to fight to get one, attendents always on hand to lay out your towels etc and bring drinks. We had to use the medical services for my dad, and this was quick efficient and inexpensive. The egyptian people are very friendly, and want to make you come back to visit again.

The only thing I did not like about the hotel was the food that was included if you are half board, the restaurant is nice, but the food inside was very much catered towards the german taste, and I think that as more and more brits are going this should be revised, it wasn't bad but wasn't the best either. The food that was served was fresh, nicley presented and OK However on a more positive note the hotel has various restaurants, Egyptian, Indian, Italian, Pizzeria, Steak house which although you had to pay was very cheap example £4.00 for main course and drink at any off the above.

Hurghada itself was much bigger than I expected, we only managed to make it to the part of the town known as Sekalla, and this was fab, this has expoded into a lovely resort town over the last 10 yrs when there was only 4 hotel in the whole of Hurghada, the shopping is fab especially the jewellery and you soon learn to barter for a bargain, be aware it is customery for them to come out of the shops and try to get you in, it is rude not to accept the compliementary drinks they are offering, but they do not pester or intimidate you. The fun part was getting what is a bus, but then they change to a taxi to charge you more once you are in, but what they are charging is the equivalen of 20p per person.

We also went on a 3 night trip to Cairo,(next time I would fly not take the 8 hr overnight coach from Hurghada, not comfy and the driving is mental) that we had already paid for in the UK, we stayed in the hotel Le Sphinx in Giza Cairo and this was also fab. We did not book any trips with reps are all really expensive, they wanted £40.00 per person to visit Pyramids, they are so close to the hotel, the trip was not worth it, we were approached by the concierge in the hotel, as he overheard us, he arranged our trips via the Hertz desk in the hotel, and we ended up with our own private driver Karim for two days and he was fab, he took us to the pyramids, told us about his culture, the his family, where he lived what is expected of him etc, as well as taking us to the Carpet makers, Perfumery, Papyrus making, Bizarre all on our first day this cost us £50.00 for 5 people, he bought us drinks and planned a suprise for Day 2.

On day 2 we went to the Cairo museum to see the treasures we only lasted 90 mins, the museum is a guddle, no layout plan, no air conditioning and they let too many people in. We saw Kings Tuts stuff and left, we then went at night to Sound and Light Show this was a highlight and insted of £25.00 cost £6.00

The surprise was he took us to a Church they are carving out of the mountains and it was lovely. Please note the Poverty takes a lot of getting used too. Most of my party also ventured to Luxor, I could not face the journey some 4.5hr from the hotel, they all loved it but again book outside hotel at Narsh Express Tours it will cos you £15.00 instead of £40.00 (you are on the same coaches etc)I went snorkelling and that was amazing whole day for £7.00.

I would recommend Egypt and in particular Hurghada to everyone.

amazing hoyel

from leopardlizzy
this hotel built in traditional arabic style offers luxury at affordable prices. The numerous bars and resturants offer enough choice fpr any palate. There is entertainment for every age from childrens , traditional to clubbing in the jungle club which is as wild as the name suggests. I would highly reccomend this hotel

Everything is OK!

from sunshine_hunter
"Everything is OK?" A question you will hear regularly at this hotel. Yes everything is OK but that's just it, it's only OK. This hotel is by no means 5 star. Showering in semi-darkness for 2 weeks eventually becomes annoying. The rooms whilst being large and comfortable were not cleaned even to 3 star standard (despite tipping at the start of the holiday). The main buffet restaurant was excellent for the 1st few days then some staff went home and the service and food became very poor and the food in the 2nd buffet restaurant was cold (both times that we tried). This was really disappointing because every other restaurant was excellent (but they're not included in your half board)!! There's lots of beautiful greenery in this large spread out hotel, but be warned - greenery means mosquitos! Despite claiming to fumigate the place twice a day (dusk and dawn) we saw no evidence of this and the bugs were having a field day. You will be pestered silly by flys at the pool during the day and we're absolutely convinced the majority of our mosquito bites came whilst enjoyng a few drinks in the large lobby. Once out of the hotel you will be harassed by people trying to sell you stuff, this is no different to any other areas of Egypt, it's just their style. Tipping is expected in Egypt, but unlike other parts of the country where if you tip at the outset you will be given extra special treatment, tip at the start in this hotel and you can expect to be ignored - they've got their money, you're now no more use to them. Pretty sure we won't be returning to this hotel next year!!!

a pleasure

what a stunning and well maintained hotel, staff very attentive and lovely people. bedrooms are stunning and very roomy. standard of food very good and lots and lots of choice, nice beach across the road at grand hotel and a big waterslide to play around on. hurghada its self is spread aroud over a large area between old town and the newer areas. sekalla is the best place for shopping and it only costs 10pence in the local bus but make sure you check as to it being used as a bus or taxi the difference is the taxi is all yours and wont pick up any passengers but cost more but is still only 10 egyptian pounds ( 1 quid ).
the old town is very different and feels very egyptian
good for a mooch around and a drink of local tea or coffee. best to book your trips in sekalla much cheaper than hotel reps we paid 80 egyptian for full day sea trip rep want 440 a big difference. give it a try and you will love it.

under lying problems I wouldnt go back

the Grand Resort, looks the part a very plush hotel, the hotel is lovely to look at from inside and out. But the higher positioned staff on reception were rude and unfriendly, the bedrooms weren't clean to a good standard and the food was undercooked especially the beef pork and lamb joints, very chewy and thing I will say in its favour the staff returned an expensive camera we had misplaced, so that pleased us. Hurghada has two four main things hotels, shops, beach and banks if you walk outside your hotel the locals will hassle you constantly as they did us , if you say you have already have brought something they will return with the answer "why" though some are really freindly, Hurghada after the nile trip where we where pampered, was a real letdown. we shall not be returning

Not 5 star

from Bernic
This hotel is huge. Rooms are allocated outside of main hotel building giving it the feeling of staying in self catering accomodation. The room its self was large well furnished but dark. The bathroom was fitted to a poor standard with huge gaps in doorframes grouting etc. Fittings which were hanging from the walls were however rectified after a couple of days.

The large main dining room was attractive with adequate clean tables cutlery and crockery. This however was not the case in the smaller
restaurant located outside the main hotel near the pool area. Not a morning went by when we were not faced by dirty tables lack of crockery, cutlery or tea.

Facilities at the neighbouring Grand Hotel and the hotel itself far outclassed the Grand Resort yet it is deemed to have a lesser star rating.

On the whole I would rate the Grand Resort as a good 3 star/adequate 4 star hotel.

Top Local Tips for Hurghada

Football You CAN get Champions League and Premiership football when ya away - you can even get some games in the room!!!!!

Get a jab before you come Get some kind of innoculation before you go to Egypt as the water is not good and all food is washed and cooked in it. The usual packet of immodium may not be enough.

boiling dont go in june
