Top Local Tips for Dahab

Snorkelling in Dahab okay, writing this as a former marine biology instructor, professional aquarist who can no longer dive because of inner ear problems-- I know, sad huh? While there are some lovely places to snorkel in Dahab it's not really a place to go for "big ticket items"... sure we saw some rays and a few rare angels but no sharks and only one turtle and my wife and I are in the water for at least three hours per day... if you go to Google Earth you can see there's a boot-like peninsula extending south to edge of the bay... snorkelling around the "heel" of this formation, which is called napoleon reef because it's fairly close to the surface except on its southermost edge is the best snorkelling we found on two visits to Dahab... the blue hole is crowded and over-rated, the lighthouse is degraded and full of divers in training and trash and while the Eel garden has some amazing coral and of course the eels of it's namesake, the water and currents can be little rough going. Islands reef is good too.

St Katherine's Monastery Interesting if you like that kind of thing but seriously overcrowded with tourists.
