Historical Traveller Reviews of Windsor Hotel Cairo

A Fantastic Place to Stay

from MaryLegs
The Windsor is a wonderful place to stay. Cheaper than most hotels and has more class and culture than all the others I have visited in Egypt. It is true to say that the windor is not for all types and if you want 5* neuveau riche then I don't think it is for you. If you are looking for culture, class, environment and atmosphere then this is the place. The bar is famous and deservedly so, the Doss Family who own and run the Wndsor are based at the hotel and always available to help with any enquiries about travel, excursions etc. (especially Wanil, the son who is great to talk to - especially about Egyptian history and good non touristy places to visit). The staff there are very helpful and friendly and the homemade lemonade is a must after a days sightseeing.

The Charming Windsor

from RashnaD
Lately i have been traveling a lot because of work and this takes me through a lot of hotels. Hotel Windsor on 19 Alfi street Cairo has been the most charming hotel i have had a pleasure of staying till date.
Traveling alone to Cairo i had my apprehensions but the Familie Doss and their staff put me at ease as soon as i stepped into the hotel. The staff especially are ever willing to help you with a smile that is genuine and not only because you are going to tip them.
The location is central, but not very touristy hence you do get the local feel of the place but most endearing feature is the Hotel it self. The Doss family has managed to maintain its 1900s charm immaculately. The antiques be it furniture or little curios are scattered all over giving you a glimpse of an era gone by. And if you are fortunate enough to have a chat with the ever charming Doss Family member they will gladly fill you in with interesting trivia about the hotel and its history .They will also make sure that your stay is the most comfortable in all ways possible.
Their tariff is very reasonable. Extremely clean from the crisp white linen to their bathrooms and toilets. They have air conditioning. There is free wi fi in the bar and you will always find good company and conversation there. If you are the silent kind and prefer your own company that’s ok too they have secluded corners where you can sit and no one will bother you. Also if you are a single woman traveling i strongly suggest that you stay here. Food is good and their cookies great. You have all the modern amenities plus hot water.Just carry a 2 pin multi utility plug for your electrical.
But if you are looking for a hotel that is ultramodern and the old world charm does not excite you then UNFORTUNATELY FOR YOU this is not the place to stay .
For that true romantic and the real traveler The Windsor is a hotel to have on their itinerary...imagine you can live in a hotel which has been a part of Cairo’s history.
My trip to Egypt was unforgetable and it was made extra special because i stayed at the Windsor hotel.
Happy Travels.....

Windsor Family

from Trop
Arriving from the Cairo Airport, it was great to have such a warm welcome in the Hotel Lounge / Bar. Staff and owner took care of all the guests as if they are part of the Windsor family. So I felt at home immediately.

Atmosphere is colonial, relaxed, egyptian and the people you meet in the hotelbar is a mix of travellers, businessmen, expats and egyptians. Drink and excellent food is available all day. You can also find a quiet corner for reading or working.

Location is perfect in the middle of downtown Cairo. When you leave the hotel, you find yourself in the middle of egyptian city life. If you like Windsor Hotel can arrange everything for you and help you find your way in Cairo and Egypt. Besides they provide lots of information about all important and less important things that might be useful to know.

Rooms are good, but don't stay in your room all day, they are meant for sleeping.

Depressing place!

from TotoChan
I booked directly with the hotel and I must say that they were prompt and professional in their replies.

But sad to say, it was a nightmare when we reached as the place was shabbily hidden in a quiet area. The room was worst than what I had imagined. The bathroom was cramp and lights were dim and dirty. My biggest hell came from the bed as I was badly bitten by the bedbugs. Also, the staff refused to return us our passports, claiming that they are not done with the registration.

Doubtless, the staff are friendly but a little cocky. In any case, if one has more budget, please reconsider other hotels or budget inns. The bite from the bugs are not worth the stay.

wonderful windsor

from lollye
Admittedly, one person's hovel is another person's heaven. For us the Windsor was heaven. Beginning with basics: the location was perfect, small tree lined street midway between the Egyptian Museum and the old Islamic district. The water was hot. The employees were unfailingly friendly and helpful. The rooms were spacious. But most of all, it was a haven in a frenetic (but fascinating) city. It was wonderful to come back at the end of the day and settle into the very period evocative, very comfortable lounge. The food was delicious. It might not be for everybody, if one is looking for the predictably sterile, but I would stay there, happily, anytime.

Dirty, very high prices, unprofessional personal...

from Ochiul
I made a reservation for a deluxe double, they offered me a double with shared toilette. In the end, after I refused that room they gave me a double with dirty toilette (I cleaned myself the bathroom) at 48$. So, I do not understand why someone could not simple use soap and watter to clean all the "vintage" precious things in the room, and why they could not change all that used and damaged furniture, doors, beds, etc... So, after a nightmare night to Windsor, I choosed a 2 stars clean hotel named Capsis at 25$ a double with bathroom, A/C, TV, better breakfast, on Ramses St. (near Orabi Metro station)...

Definitely past it's sell-by date. Comparatively it is overpriced, other cheaper hotels offer a similar service.

It has it's charm but definitely needs to be cleaned up. The plumbing must have been renovated recently because I would say that it probably had the best in all the hotels I stayed in Egypt.

They didnt confirmed that they would pick me up at the airport after initially refusing to do so because I didnt provide credit card details. later when I did arrive late after my flight was delayed, they stiffed me for half the airport pick up fee.... definitely left a bad taste in the mouth.

Conversely the "New Windsor" (no connection I think) in Luxor was considerably cheaper, has much better rooms, friendlier staff, better TV, more central, and a pool to boot! I definitely recomend a stay there.

On my return trip to Cairo I stayed in the much cheaper, cleaner, Lotus Hotel... no frills, but no complaints.

from WazaBeirut
I was amazed that such a place existed, the lift, the bar, the different floors, it was like stepping into the 1920's. Me and the other guests I met in the charming barrel bar agreed that some small improvements would make it perfect, but for me it was better than anywhere else in Cairo, at least for authentiicity and character, very freindly staff also.

Charm n Character

from appleNyc
The Windsor oozes charm and history. It made our stay in Egypt very romantic, returning every day to this landmark home away from home.
Great location in the heart of the city, a unique "must visit" bar, good restaurant, and overall clean. Bathroom fixtures "old" but functional.
We highly recommend it.

One of my favourites

from Incense_Trader
OK, I'm biased!
I've been staying at the Windsor once or twice a year for probably about the last ten years and the staff all know me as Mr Peter from England.
This place has CHARACTER. Yes, the rooms are very basic (as is the breakfast) and like many (if not most) elderly middle eastern hotels the showers can sometimes be a little temperemental. However the warmth and friendliness of the staff is second to none, and the location is excellent -especially if you want to get away from the tourist traps and do some serious shopping!

Top Local Tips for Cairo

Street Food Eat in the cheap places just off the street, which serve staples like Falafel and Koshari. It's by far the best food and at the best prices!

Tea and Sheesa Just have a tea and a Sheesa (waterpipe) and stay put for half a day. Meet the Egyptians and enjoy egyptian life.
