Top Local Tips for Cairo
Nightmare traffic Go by taxis in town and service taxis or bus for long distance trips, travel is cheap. Don't attempt to rent a car for driving in Cairo it would be a nightmare. Although at first a bit of a culture shock and very noisy and polluted Cairo is a safe place, except for crossing the road, and everyone you meet is very courteous and friendly.
Prepare yourself for baksheesh and dishonesty None of the advice from various sources had prepared me fully on the extent to which some Egyptians would go to to persuade you to part with money. Tactics such as: 1) lying that your destination (e.g. museum, botanical garden, etc) is shut/closed/being repaired to divert you to somewhere else for you to spend your money; 2) waiting until you are at your most vulnerable (e.g. mid-river, mid-desert, mid-way point) before stopping to attempt to raise a pre-arranged price; 3) persistance; 4) guilt; 5) deception.... but thankfully anything non-physical ! If there had been none of the above it would have been a truely wonderful holiday - instead it was sadly degraded to a test of endurance at times.
Do not waste your time on the Dinner cruise in Cairo. Went to a dinner cruise in Cairo to see belly dancing- and Cairo harbour during Heid. Food was lousy- we got sick the next day. Entertainment was substandard- was not worth the time or the coin ($40 per person). Please take my advise skip it.
