Top Local Tips for Cairo
Choose Aquafina for your water I dont know how true this is but my guide told us to try to stick to some water brand with low T.D.S because of the risk of stomach run. Steer clear of Baracula *I cant remember the spelling* instead stick to water with TDS below 200. Apparently they wont provoke further runs if you have a bad stomach. I and my frds stayed 12 days in Egypt and none of us had problem with the stomach despite us eating at their roadside food stall.
khan al khalil khan al khalil is a grt market to visit, with things ranging from the odd nik naks to gold shops, tradition resturants selling food and fresh juices. Be sure to bargain, a tourist here will autmatically face a higher marked price than a local would, dont feel shy to bargain. If you dont really want to buy a certain product, i advise not to touch it, once u touch soemthing and walk off the sellers will probably try to get u to come back to their shops and buy their goods. Feel free to ask any questions about the products, ie where they are made, if its made by family or from another land. general talk with the shop owner is encouraged, some of them are very freindly and will lower the price for u. If you dont talk arabic then talk slowly in english, some of the locals can not understand swift english accents, so have patience ifthey ask you again what you mean or make a hand gesture as so to say sorry what do u mean ? usually the shake of a hand from side to side with the palm facing up
Shopping @ Hussein Al Khalily Bargain 70% of the price they offer.. especially when a lot of tourist coming (means in peak season). You'll surprise what you can get from them. don't forget to try To'miya Bilbit, the Egyptian common Food. It's like shawirma but without meat. it's good for vegetarian too.. and also try to drink Carcade, their red drink made from some herbs.. it's good for your digestion.
