Camels Make sure you haggle with the local people and make sure you pay close to the prices that the internet and the hotel tell you things should be.
Forget how to speak English To ward off the unwanted peddlers at major tourist sites, I lost the ability to speak English. I just rambled in my high school Spanish, and they gave up. Polite and then firm "No thank you"s were not working. At the pyramids, never surrender your ticket to anybody unless they are in a uniform. One peddler got in my face saying he was a "watchman" and needed to see my ticket. Once he had my ticket, he recited the numbers and said I had to follow him because he was going to give me a tour. WRONG. I asked for my ticket back and did not show it to anybody else during my 4 hour visit. At least 6 other peddlers tried the same trick. It really is sad that the Egyptian authorities allow people to so obviously try to take advantage of tourists almost every step of the way. It was the worst part of the trip.
