I walked in to the main lobby and it was beautiful, with flowers and nice decorative fixtures, paintings, etc. I took the old style elevator to the 6th floor...down the hall...it started to look like they stopped working on the place...then in my room. It was moldy...faucet squeeked (SQUEEEEEK), window would not close, and there was a balcony from the next building that you can virtually climb on to my window sill from.
The bed was clean...but that's it. The room was otherwise like the Bates Motel...dull...dingy...etc. I decided this wasn't going to spoil my stay...so I made sure I tipped the elevator guy, the conceirge, and the room service. That's how I made friends! They were at my beck and call...but that's how things are done in Egypt. Just tip the shit out of them and they will love you! It made my stay in that hotel more tolerable. The old bar downstairs was really cozy...very dark and rustic.
I don't recommend this hotel if you have high expectations.
The Egyptian Museum is a just a few blocks away...THAT was nice!
Cheers.

I have bad experience with "Cosmopolitan hotel" at Cairo.
- My cash is stolen 800 dollar
- Only one lamp works inside my room
- AC is too old and loud
- We pay 60 Dollar per night, but quality is like small Youth Hostel
- I read many Bad comments from Internet about this hotel before I chose it, and most of them are True.
Don't go there. If you plan to have a good hotel in Cairo. Please, select 4 or 5 star hotel.
Listen to my warning!!!

We stayed here for 8 days (too long for Cairo in general). The building has seen better days, but the room, though small, had high ceilings, was bright and had french doors that opened to let in a nice breeze (although for August, we had the a/c on almost all the time.) Since it is an old building, it wasn't the cleanest and things were falling apart in the bathrooms.
The central location was the best thing about the hotel. Places to eat and shop right outside your door, close to the Museum and the Nile.
There is a place across the street was always a good late night place to get tea and a shisha.
The hotel became a great home base, but it wasn't extremely comfortable to be there.
The porters and cleaners were very nice. But beware of the front desk, some of their employees will sell you tours to the pyramids, luxor or nile dinner cruises. Don't be duped into taking them!!! (like we did and learned the hard way).

as a student traveller I had long days and fun nights while staying in a variety of hotels (5 actually, over the span of two weeks)and while the other hotels we stayed at were 5 star resorts with pools and fancy fruity drinks, the cosmopolitan was our FAVORITE- we referred to this hotel as "home" while in Egypt. It was worn in but had something the other hotels lacked- character. It was located in the heart of Cairo- shopping, restaurants, banks, everything was right outside the door. The food wasn't anything amazing- but who cares..Wouldnt you rather take the 2-minute walk somewhere else to experience a variety of Egyptian foods where one can have a feast for about 2 American dollars? The staff was charming as were the fellas running the Shisha cafe right outside the door- they were so hospitable and never asked for baksheesh, in fact we had become such friends by the end of the week they refused to take our money for anything we ordered. don't be so expectant and take a break from luxury you will have a fantastic time and after all- ITS NOT AN EXPENSIVE HOTEL PEOPLE there IS a Hilton across the bridge you could have stayed at instead (?):)

Hotel is old, worn, has character - but no hot water. An abundance of service people that just seem to hang around and look for tips. Stay FAR away from the gift shop that sells fake gold jewelery claiming it to be genuine. Buyer beware is too real. Just stay away from the entire place, you'll be much happier.

The Cosmopolitan has charm, good prices, friendly staff. It is an old-fashioned hotel, a bit worn, but with a beaut location: walking distance from the Nile, Felfella's restaurant, banks, downtown shops, the metro. Quiet and safe. I have stayed here at least a dozen times! The included breakfast is adequate though unimpressive. I was very surprised by Palle's loss - my valuables have been OK there but admittedly I never leave cash in a hotel room.

With interesting period decoration, grand lobby and stairs and a central location the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Cairo has got the potential to be good, but it is just awful. All floors (rooms, halls ,stairs, breakfast room, bar etc.) are carpeted in filth. They do have vacuum cleaners, displayed in hallways like art installations, but not put to any use. The bar, even with barely any guests for staff to attend to, is all dirty ashtrays and sticky surfaces. It is not that there is no staff in the Cosmopolitan. But they all seem to be middle management whose job description is to hang around. To get a drop of milk for your morning coffee will involve at least three of these managers. A waste of resources; resources that are much needed in the kitchen. Pity that the staff and management at the Cosmopolitan Hotel do not want the guests to have a better experience. What they do want however is your money. For the first time ever we had cash stolen from our hotel room. Please stay away.
