We stayed at the Sofitel Old Cataract last November and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. It was such an experience, the food, the staff, everything about it was just out of this world. We even asked what room Agatha Christie stayed at. We stayed in a deluxe room and an unbelieveable view to match. A great stay and a great experience, a must to go! We will definitely be stayed again!

Top Local Tips for Aswan

Selecting a Taxi If you are staying at a nice hotel, ask the front desk to arrange your taxi service for you. Most of the drivers they use are safer and more low-key. Getting a random taxi driver can be annoying because he will pester you with endless touts.

The market at night Go to visit the market at night. It is being upgraded so is a pleasant way to spend an evening. while the vendors do hassle you it is fairly light compared to some other destination (eg China). Is safe and a pleasant walk from ost of the major hotels.

Kalabsha Temple it is a real pain to get here but worth all the trouble! Our taxi driver tried to dissuade us as it was 'too far and too hot', the ferry is located in a scrap yard, the Temple is accessed by a steep ramp but it is beautiful and so peaceful. We paid about LE65 for the cab, the boatman refused to take us for less than LE50 (Lonely Planet said LE25, boatman said 'fil mish mish!'). Temple entry LE 25
