Awesome Genuine Backpacker Hostel
I had an awesome time at Big John's. It's a real backpacker hostel in what is the better part of town. I met some really nice, down to earth, honest people, including John himself and his staff.
Don't come if you're looking for 5 star service, a sterile environment and people with personalities to match. But, if you are looking for an inxpensive, basic hostel with character of its own, free internet and free wifi and damn good food this is the place for you. Big John's Backpacker Hostel is away from normal tourist haunts and the undesirables in those types of areas. Thonglor, Ekkamai & RCA are full of restaurants and clubs frequented by locals and a few travelers. I find it hard to understand some of the poor ratings here, but I guess some people just expect to much to often.
Good onya John. I'll be back mate.

Big John fails to deliver
If you need to get up early in the AM to catch a bus at the Eastern bus terminal, then stay here. Otherwise, avoid it at all costs.. Big John's Hostel gets a big fat ZERO in my books and Big John is an even bigger jerk. Not only does the place lack social atmoshphere, which in a hostel is a definate must, Big John is constantly berating his staff, no wonder they don't smile, and could care less about the oh so popular term , "customer service". Yes it was clean and yes it was only $4USD a night, but it's not like the plethora of other places in Bangkok don't offer the same. That's my two sense. I also agree with a previous posting...if you want better reviews...you have to earn them!

Missing something
Big John's felt a bit like one of those Bangkok hostels that you see in the movies - the paint was peeling off in places, the extraction fan hadn't been cleaned in a decade and I wasn't quite sure if the bed linen had been changed since the previous occupant. Contrary to the previous review however, John seemed ok and the staff were pleasant, but I feel that despite it being a budget hostel, a bit more effort could be made with aesthetics and cleanliness.

Not the place to stay.
John your manipulating the review system here.
How many places are you going to post your own review? and how many times?
On most sites that you cannot manipulate your rating is the lowest in Bangkok ( 11/11/06) .
You definitly live in your own world. You are not a nice man.
