TOP DESTINATIONS Add your favourite destination
Iguazu – Fly here from Buenos Aires domestic airport (Aerolineas Argentinos). These falls lie in Parque Nacional Iguaza and are a must to see. At least 5000 cubic metres of water fall at least 70 metres per second down into the thundering cauldron below; the falls are in excess of 2 kilometres wide. Catwalks allow you to view the falls from close range so be sure to wear waterproofs – the wind can carry the spray quite a distance. Look out for parrots, parakeets, orchids and Morphos butterflies.

La Boca – A district of Buenos Aries famed for its tango shows and mime artists. The shows are well worth a visit and last about one and a half hours. In this area you will find many restaurants, markets, and street performers – do take your camera.

Recoleta Cemetery – this is where Argentina’s rich lie in very grand and ornate tombs. Eva Peron is here with her family and other elite persons lie in their tombs. Organised tours come here regularly, it’s open 0700 – 1800 hours and you can either wander around freely or join one of these tours

Salta - Argentina Northwest - by Raul Cedolini from Argentina - 2006-09-09
Argentinean Northwest is well-known because of its ancient culture as well as its wide range of climates which includes the wilderness of the Puna and the lushness of the Jungle.

WHEN TO GO Add your opinion
January to April; September to November

GREAT OUTDOORS Add your great outdoor
Estancia Huechahue - Argentina is vast, just slightly smaller in area than India. It has the Pampas, the Andes, Patagonia, and a considerable length of coastline adjutting the South Atlantic Ocean. In Buenos Aires there are companies which operate background excursions to northern Argentina and Chile. They travel to Neuquen province where there is the Estancia Huechahue, situated in a beautiful valley on the Rio Alumine. It offers all-inclusive trekking and riding holidays; accommodation is very good and situated in the middle of apple orchards. There’s also bird watching, walking, Indian history, and all the activities of a working estancia.

San Martin de los Andes – This beautiful town can be accessed by air from Buenos Aires flying daily except Wednesdays. It’s a very popular tourist site nestled amid brilliant Andean scenery. It was originally an army post, founded in 1898. It is a great place to meet women on nearly every corner of the street, selling time-shares! You can hire mountain bikes, go rafting on the Rio Hua Hum, go trekking and climbing, and even ski at nearby Cerro Chapelco in winter. There are several hotels here where you can stay for a reasonable cost. There are also plenty of cafes which cater for breakfast, lunch, and dinner all at a very reasonable price. While you are in San Martin do look for the local Indian weavings which, when purchased, help the Indian community sustain themselves, both for food and local produce.

Puntas Arenas – It lies in Chilean Patagonia and is well worth a visit while you’re in this part of the world. It’s a very rugged mountainous area battered by westerly winds. Here, you’ve got the southern continental ice fields with their awesome glaciers – watch the sunrise and set above them, it’s spectacular. Also look out for the fabled Albatross which do frequent here sometimes. You can reach here by either by land and air from Argentina or by sea from mainland Chile. There are several tribes of Indians surviving in this harsh climate, including Ona, Yahgan, Alacaluf, and Tehuelche, all of whom subsist on fishing, hunting, and gathering. Punta Arenas was founded in 1848 as a military garrison and penal settlement; in it’s early days it’s economy depended on wild animal products such as seal skins, guanaco hides, and feathers. If you want to sail the same water as the Beagle, you can go on week-long luxury cruises from Punta Arenas through the Cordillera de Darwin, Beagle Channel, and Puerto Williams and back. These cruises are not cheap but do offer the traveller to see parts of this spectacular land that otherwise would be both difficult and expensive to access

MOVING AROUND Add your opinion
Air - 2 airlines operate, Aerolineas Argentinas and Austral, both operate domestic routes at the same price. Many of the main cities have connections only through Buenos Aires but short-haul airlines such as Southern Winds, link provincial destinations without passing through the capital. Please note that in summer and holidays, all Patagonian flights may be heavily booked therefore it's advisable to book well in advance. Look out for banda negativa where limited seats on a chosen flight every month can be bought at a 40% discount; often these flights are at night time and require advance purchase.

Bus - The bus service here covers a large chunk of Argentina’s road network. They are fast, comfortable, and spacious. During holiday periods it’s a good idea to buy your ticket a day before you travel; these tickets can be obtained from the town or city bus terminal. Costs are roughly US$3 per hour of journey.

Train -Trips are often longer than bus trips due to frequent delays, breakdowns, and strikes. In and around Buenos Aires the commuter routes are frequent and often on time but they can be crowded because the fares are cheaper than the buses, but you can certainly cover most of the country by this means
