| VIRGINIA BEACH LOCAL HISTORY |

Admiral Christopher Newport organised some 30-odd men to go ashore at the present site of the city of Virginia Beach in 1607. They named it The Chesapeake Bay, the same name that the Indians used. They erected a cross, claimed the land in the name of God and England and conducted the first religious ceremony of the Church of England in America.
The colonists, fearing attacks from the Spanish and Indians, moved inland and it was only 14 years after the first landing, that the colonists settled at the present site of Virginia Beach.The city grew slower around the U.S. Lifesaving Coast guard station, which is now the local Maritime Historical Museum.
The Old Cape Henry Lighthouse was authorised by America's First Congress and built in 1791 to warn mariners of Virginia's treachous seas. Virginia Beach had a abdundance of natural resources - unlimited supply of wildlife, fertile soil, numerous deep rivers and excellent accessibility to the sea, the last making it the prime seaside resort of the state of Virginia. |

Chicho's - 2112 Atlantic Ave. For more than 30 years, Chicho's has provided a venue for locals and visitors alike to dance the evenings away in a casual atmosphere.
Peabody's - 21st Str. The largest dance club at the beach since 1969, Peabody's boasts a big dance floor, three huge bars, pool tables and a stage for local bands to perform.
Abbey Road Pub - 203 22nd Str. A lively bar with over a hundred different beers to try and nightly live rock 'n roll and jazz. |

Virginia beach is the prime seaside resort in the state of Virginia and its beaches provide a good place to relax and stretch out on the sand or people-watch from the three-mile promenade with its parallel bike trail.
The waters around Virginia Beach are cool and clear, good for snorkelling and diving.
It is also the place where the history of surfing started and is home to the East Coast Surfing Championships and offers great surfing "breaks" year round. Bass fisherman will also find great places to try their luck at Rudee Inlet, just south of Virginia beach oceanfront and at Lynnhaven Inlet, west of Cape Henry, which also provides quick access to the Chesapeake Bay bridge-tunnel. |
