| Pierre is the capital of South Dakota, and is set of the east bank of the Missouri River, originally home of the Arikara people, the city is today the administrative centre of South Dakota, and an important centre for the surrounding agricultural region where cattle and grain are the main interests.

South Dakota Heritage Museum – Dedicated to preserving the agricultural history and rural heritage of South Dakota, this museum also throws light on how cultures and institutions were shaped by the rural backdrop and changing environment. The museum is located on the campus of South Dakota State University, Medary Avenue and 11th Street, and is open to the public, free admission.
The State Capitol – this magnificent building in Pierre was built in 1910, and is one of the main points of interest in the city. It has a man-made artesian lake in the complex, which offers a serene beauty and great birdlife.
Farm Island Recreation Area - This centre east of Pierre, gives visitors the opportunity of enjoying the outdoors, with easy access to Lake Sharpe, beaches, trails, and bird watching. Fishing, hiking, and camping are all available just 4 miles off SD Highway 34, at the Farm Island Recreation Area, which is open year round.
Fort Pierre – There is a great deal to see and do in Fort Pierre across the river from Pierre, with more than 116,000 acres of native mixed-grass prairie and rich in wildlife, and the Fischer Lilly Park, where the Lewis and Clark expedition had their celebrated first run-in with the Teton Sioux. The Triple U Buffalo Ranch is also located in the area where "Dances With Wolves," was filmed.
