| CANYON CITY LOCAL HISTORY |
|
The Canyon Mountain overlooks this picturesque town, which may be small, but is surrounded by magnificent scenery and has a pleasant community spirit that enhances the appeal of Canyon City.
Historically significant, and the county seat of Grant County, Canyon was where the “Gold Rush” was set in motion. Even today, some try their luck at panning for gold in the Canyon Creek, which runs through the town.

Kam Wah Chung & Co. Museum – Located in nearby John Day, this was once the home and opium den, as well as serving as general store, of the Chinese herbalist Ing Hay. Historic St. Thomas Episcopal Church – this historic church was built in 1876 and is still standing in Canyon City. Listed in the National Register of Historical Places, one can imagine the people who used to attend sermons here, after a riotous night of boozing and living it up on the earnings of their daily gold panning.
Grant County Museum, Greenhorn Jail and Joaquin Miller Cabin – Gold Rush memorabilia, Indian artefacts, antique pianos, all bring back the days when Canyon City was the centre of the desperate search for gold that brought miners, vagabonds, gamblers, and ladies of the night to this part of the land.
