WHEN TO GO Add your opinion
North Dakota has seasons of extremes, with hot summers and cold winters. The best time to go would be between seasons; to see flowers in bloom visit during May and September. Note that many historical sites are only open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

GREAT OUTDOORS Add your great outdoor
Theodore Roosevelt National Park - Explore the southern park on horseback, or head north to follow the Little Missouri Riverbanks with its weird stone formations and desolate grassy plains. There is plenty of wildlife- numerous bison, prairie dogs and deer call this place home. This park covers 70 000 acres and was created as a memorial to President Rooseveldt by President Truman in 1947.

Devils Lake - This glacial lake offers some excellent fishing and boating . The lake is rather a mixed blessing to locals. It brings in the tourist revenue but is steadily rising and encroaching on the local housing.

Saskawea Trail - Set your pioneering spirit free on this trail of striking contrasts and head out towards the riverside lodging at Fort Mandan. Further on are the Arroda Lakes set between emerald fields and the Missouri river and another Fort - Fort Clark, standing at attention and waiting your inspection.

MOVING AROUND Add your opinion
North Dakota is a land of flat endless Interstate road in the East and a more rugged West due to the Missouri Plateau and most travelling is done by car due to vaste stretches of land between towns. Head for a "Welcome Center" sign - for ample tourist and travel information and very welcome restrooms! There are public bus services but their routes are limited. The public rail system is the St Louis Metrorail which is reliable but wont get to all the places that you may want to visit.
