| MOUNT LAUREL LOCAL HISTORY |
|
The Mount Laurel area was inhabited by the Lenape Indians from around 1400 to 1700. Settlers bought 300 acres from them in the 1680’s and settled the town of Mount Laurel. The first post office arrived in 1849 and was housed in the town’s general store.
The town was not he sight of any battles during the revolution but was used as a headquarters and hospital for General Washington and the British forces led by General Clinton. |

Farmer’s Hall – Built in 1866 by the Farmer’s Progressive Club, the hall was used in the past for the annual election of town officers. It served as the town hall from 1904 to 1969. The hall is now used as a museum after its restoration in 2002.
The Lippincott House – This building used to house a general store owned by Lydia Haines. In 1849, the post office moved in with the store. The Enterprise Library was also housed here and was founded in 1874 and contained 500 volumes. The stage line to Philadelphia made frequent stops here in the past.
The Clinton House – This house dates back to 1744 when it was used as a tavern. General Sir Henry Clinton used this house as his headquarters on June 19, 1778. The second window from the right on the top story replaces the “corpse door”, a necessity in the house due to its spiral staircase that would not allow a coffin to pass. |
