Squam Lakes Area - by Lisa from United States - 2007-02-06
Famous for the movie "On Golden Pond". Squam Lakes are considered some of the most pristine lakes in New Hampshire, located at the beginning of the White Mountains the Squam Mountain range offers a variety of hikes. Ideally situated in Central New Hampshire, Squam Lakes are just a short drive from all New Hampshire has to offer. Experience the natural beauty and tranquility of Golden Pond with a stay at one of the area's premier locations, The Manor On Golden Pond.

WHEN TO GO Add your opinion
New Hampshire is a popular destination in summer and autumn (when the abundant trees change colour and are absolutely beautiful). However, if you are visiting one of the ski resorts, winter is the obvious choice.

GREAT OUTDOORS Add your great outdoor
White Mountain National Forest - This huge conservation area is not just about trees and mountain but has a diverse wildlife component, too. Watch out for those moose darting across the road while you are staring slackjawed at the magnificent autumn leaves or cascading waterfalls. This area is ideal for all kinds of outdoors activities, such as fishing, hiking or kayaking. A drive up the Kancamagus Highway is a must - this is surely the most spectacular scenery in the state.

Skiing - The mountain offer a superb choice of skiing options. Try the Cranmore Ski Resort that has a 350ft half pipe. Loon Mountain is a less crowded, upmarket ski resort and has the drawcard of horseriding during warmer weather for those who prefer something more solid than a pair of ski's to get from A to B.

Pinkham Notch - This area is popular hiking ground, with trails going all the way to the summit of Mt Washington. Care must be taken when hiking, as the weather can suddenly change for the worse.Gusts of wind up to 231mph have been recorded and at least one life is lost per year in this area. Guided tours are available and start off with an informative presentation on the natural history of the mountain.

MOVING AROUND Add your opinion
The interstate bus service is good, but if you want to tour outside of the city areas you will need to rent a car. Roads are in relatively good condition but are subject to extreme weather conditions. Travellers should be cautious when driving along mountain passes, be aware of the possiblilty of animals darting onto the roads. Be aware that in winter there is the hazard of occasional blizzards and snowstorms.
