LAS VEGAS LOCAL HISTORY
The land on which Las Vegas now stands was sold to a railroad company in 1902. On 15 May 1905 the area now known as downtown was subdivided when the tracks came through with 1200 lots sold. This date now celebrated as the city’s birthday.

In 1931, Nevada legalized gambling. The first big casino, El Rancho, was built by Los Angeles developers and opened in 1941. Mobsters like Bugsy Siegel, who built the Flamingo in 1946 started a new era in casinos – big and flashy. Southern California provided a growing market for Las Vegas entertainment and Las Vegas became one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations.

Over the past years Las Vegas has become a family resort destination with theme parks inside its hotels, like million-gallon fish tanks and working volcanoes.
