| Established in 1727, Hanover was mainly a centre for agriculture and lumber. The nearby North River helped the town prosper as it was used as a means for water power and ship building became a major activity in the town. It is said that the US Constitutions anchor was made in Hanover but soon the size of the ships became to large for the river and the industry declined. In the late 19th century factories were built in the area attracting many immigrants from Lithuania and Poland. |
