BALTIMORE LOCAL HISTORY
Origionally founded in 1729, Baltimore was only incorporated in 1796. The original town was tiny with only 200 homes and became the Baltimore County Seat in 1768. The city was named after the six Lords of Baltimore who were Marylands founding family. In 1851 the city seperated from Baltimore County and was given equal status to that of a county.

The city continued to grow and the port flourished making it a ship building centre. The 13th largest city in the USA, Baltimore is a world port with significant educational and medical institutions and is one of only two independent cities in the USA.

BALTIMORE ATTRACTIONS Add your favourite attraction
Baltimore's Inner Harbour - visit the aquarium that houses sharks, sea-turtles, dolphins and thousands of other species in the two glass pyramids. The harbour also has the Maritime Museum that is housed inside a ship and World War II submarine. You can also take the elevator up 27 stories to the top of the World Trade Centre and enjoy the views of Baltimore.

Walters Art Museum - the rooms are designed to look like an ancient castle and the exhibits feature Egyptian Mummies, Medieval armor, Asian and European art and an eight storey tapestry.

Great Blacks in Wax Museum - see over 100 life like wax figures of African Americans in history.

Mount Vernon - this neighbourhood is full of the hip young crowd that studies at the nearby Peabody Conservatory. The area also has some great restaurants and features Baltimores own Washington Monument.

Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum - the birthplace of legendary baseball player Babe Ruth is a National Historic Sote and has rare videos, photos and artifacts.

Crabby Dicks Restaurant - 606 Broadway. A friendly family restaurant with Baltimore style home cooking. Try the fantastic burgers, steaks, seafood and pasta.

Celebrities Lounge - 8E Pleasant Street. A great place for a quiet drink surrounded by pictures of the stars of screen and stage. Open daily 5pm to midnight.

One - 300E Saratoga Street. Built on four levels to represent the four elements of fire, water, air and earth, this is Baltimores classiest nightclub.

Havana Club - 600 Water Street. Baltimores premier club with fabulous lighting, music, sound and a top class selection of cigars.

Jillians - 7000 Arundel Mills Circle. The best spot to drink, dance, shoot pool, watch sports, go bowling or play the latest electronic games.

BALTIMORE PARKS & GARDENS Add your favourite park & garden
Kids on the Hill - this glittering garden features sculptures created by children using mosaics.

Ladew Topiary Gardens - situated on 22 acres and featuring 15 themed flower gardens, carriage museum, historic manor house and gift shop.

BALTIMORE SHOPPING Add your favourite attraction
The Baltimore area offers an array of shopping choices from classic clothing to kitch souvenirs and traditional Baltimore handmade goods. Sandarac Gallery has unique ethnic and contemporary crafts from the USA and Asia. Shop for fine antiques, collectables, fine art and American crafts at the restored 19th century textile mill, Historic Savage Mill.

You can also dine at the cozy Rams Head Restaurant, open daily.

BALTIMORE CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES Add your favourite children's spot
Baltimore Zoo - set 180 acres of woodland, the zoo has over 2000 mammals, birds and reptiles.

Maryland Science Centre - located at the inner harbour, the centre has an IMAX theatre, planetarium shows, observatory, kids room and three floors of interactive exhibits.

Port Discovery The Kid Powered Museum - perfect for kids aged 2 to 12 the museum has temporary exhibits and is one of the USA's top five children,s museums.
