VALDOSTA LOCAL HISTORY
Some of the earliest known settlers to the area were the Creek and Seminole Indians, followed by the Spanish missionaries and then the American pioneers. Lowndes County was established in 1825 and Franklinville was the first county seat until 1837 when Troupville, named after Governor George Troup took its place.

The Gulf and Atlantic Railroad initiated the installation of a right of way four miles south of the town of Troupville. The citizens of Troupville decided to move the town four miles closer to the railway crossing, to guarantee its future prosperity. The town was then renamed Valdosta in honour of “Val d’Aosta”, the plantation home of former Governor George Troup. In 1860 Valdosta was incorporated as the new seat of county government.

Most of the city historic buildings were constructed between 1890 and 1920, when the city experienced a great deal of growth. The Valdosta Heritage Foundation is dedicated to preserving and restoring historic homes and buildings back to their original charm and beauty.
