Originally called Bear Creek, because of the bears which inhabited the banks of the creek, this town was renamed after the Civil War to honor General Wade Hampton of South Carolina and was known as Hampton. That same year, in 1873, Mr. Thomas Barnett, the justice of the peace, was elected mayor, and Hampton started to develop as a mercantile town.
In 1875, Hampton became a focal point for the cotton industry and even though the population was approximately 1,000 this was no impediment to experience a major economic boom due in part because the town had the only rail connection in Henry County for some time. Soon, cotton warehouses, a hotel and many elegant homes were constructed and the town became the riches cotton section in the area, and on May 17, 1900, the Hampton Cotton Mills were incorporated, the town grew and has prospered since. |

Atlanta Motor Speed – This is definitely the city’s mayor attraction and many visitors come from all around the country to enjoy the excitement this place has to offer. The track was constructed between the years 1959-1960, with a mayor renovation in 1997. It features 870 acres of structure and a 1.54-mile quad-oval track ready to show off its mayor drivers and teams competing among each other all year long. Hampton Train Depot - Located at East Main Street, the Hampton Train Depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and must be seen during your visit to this city. It was originally built in 1881 and operated until 1957, and its importance comes from being the only rail connection in Henry Country for many years. Also, its architecture was very unusual from other depots of the era, featuring a fireproof brick construction of the American bond pattern and ornate brick details. The place is so unique that nowadays it's available for weddings, meetings and community events.
Oaklea Manor – Located at Wynn Drive, this house was built from bricks made on site just before the Civil War in 1860. Rumors say that is was, for a short period of time, headquarters for Sherman's Army. The house has a great history along with a great architecture and represents a significant site for the city. Nowadays, its a private home but tours are available by appointment and you can always come and view it from outside.
Wetlands Center – This area offers beautiful wetlands trails along with interpretive center that includes a exhibit area and auditorium where you can learn about nature and its ecology. While wandering through the paths you will be able to view many species of animals, such as birds, beaver, river otter, muskrat, raccoon, deer, turkey, reptiles and amphibians. Surrounded by a forest and swamp you can stop for a picnic and enjoy a relaxing day with the whole family. Ribs To Go – Located at 2008 McDonough Road, Ribs to go is a great southern barbecue restaurant with delivery and takeout. The menu includes a wide selection of food, including their famous BBQ Chicken, Baby Back Ribs, BBQ Beef Ribs, Grilled Catfish and Grilled Tilapia Fillet. North Forty Park – This park is located at 9 West Main Street, North Hampton and offers 12 acres of extension for its visitors. There is 4 lighted youth baseball fields, concession stand, restroom facility and a picnic pavilion. A small area but ideal for a nice walk in the park, breath fresh area and just enjoy a relaxing afternoon with family and friends.
Panola Mountain State Park – In the nearby town of Stockbridge on Hwy 155 SW, you will find this 915 acres park where you can enjoy hiking along 2 miles of self-guided nature trails or 1 mile of fitness trail. For the younger ones the park has a playground and the whole family can enjoy having a picnic at the shelters provided. There is also a Interpretive Center which offers different programs. The park is open daily from 7am until 6pm or 9pm depending on the season.
High Falls State Park – This 1,050 acres park is located at 23.9 miles from Hampton in the town of Jackson. The park offers camping facilities and picnic shelters with a lake and swimming pool. There is also 4 miles of hiking trails, canoe and fishing boat rental and a miniature golf. The park is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and if you want to continue enjoying nature and aquatic sports there are many more attractions nearby this area. |
