Augusta is the second oldest city in Georgia and was founded in 1736 on the banks of the Savannah River. It served as a local trading post with the Indians and was named after the new bride of the Prince of Wales at the time.
The town was capital of the state from 1785 until 1795 when Atlanta became the capital. In the late 19th century the town became increasingly popular as a winter retreat and attracted many of the nations wealthiest citizens. The climate was so agreeable that a renowned golf architect built the Augusta National Golf Club which would go on to host the Masters from 1934. |

Georgia Golf Hall of Fame – Augusta is most famous for the annual major played at Augusta National Golf Course – “The Masters”. Golfing fans will therefore love the excellent museum located here that highlights the Masters competition and many of golf’s greatest players. The museum also features interactive exhibits that will challenge even seasoned golfers. The museum is located on One 11th street.
Augusta Museum of History – This museum features 23 galleries filled with outstanding exhibits of the areas history. Highlights include the Revolutionary and Civil War exhibits, Native American culture and history, the dinosaur exhibit and some industrial revolution exhibits. The address is 560 Reynolds Street.
Morris Museum of Art – This fine art museum contains work that spans two centuries. More than a dozen galleries are located here and include works by some of the South’s finest artists. The museum is on One 10th Street. |

Town Tavern – This modestly priced restaurant serves a delicious variety of seafood, steaks, salads and full Southern breakfasts. It is really popular and features a DJ in the evenings. The restaurant is open daily at 7669 Atomic Road.
Bistro 491 – Located at 491 Highland Avenue in the Surrey Centre, this fine bistro serves excellent Southern French Rustic cuisine. This place is a perfect choice if you are struggling to face another BBQ steakhouse. The menu is superb and it is recommended that you reserve a table before arriving at 706-738-6491. The dress is smart casual; they are open Monday through Saturdays for dinner.
Clavert’s – Undoubtedly one of the finest elegant dining restaurants in town. This restaurant serves a delectable selection of continental dishes prepared to perfection with impeccable service and attention to detail. Reservations are required at 706-738-4514. The address is 475 Highland Avenue; the restaurant is open for dinner only and is closed on Sundays. |

| Somewhere in Augusta – This popular nightspot features nightly events and is sure to provide a decent night out. The menu here is quite good for a bar and includes chicken wings with a selection of 24 sauces. They are open daily from lunchtime till late at 2701 Washington Road. |

| Georgia Botanical Gardens – These gardens surround the Golf Hall of Fame and include 17 acres of breathtaking display gardens located along the banks of the Savannah River. |

Augusta offers a great time if you are a shopper. For antiques head for the Broad street area where you should check out Merry’s Trash and Treasures.
As one of the worlds golfing Mecca’s, you are guaranteed to get plenty opportunities to pick up some Masters memorabilia. If you prefer mall shopping head for Augusta Mall at 3450 Wrightsboro Road. |

| Natural Science Centre’s Fort Discovery – Located on One 7th Street, this excellent centre is the perfect place for a rainy day with the kids. Adults are sure to enjoy the experience as well with over 270 hands on interactive exhibits. A gift store and restaurant are also located here. |
