VAIL LOCAL HISTORY
Vails skiing history began in the mid 1950's when the mountain was discovered, so to speak, by the 10th Mountain Division trooper Peter Seibert and Earl Eaton who was a local rancher. Seibert and Eaton were so taken by the view from the top of the mountain, that they dreamed of creating a ski area

Their dream was eventually realised in January 1962 when the US Forest Service granted them a permit. Vail got its name from highway engineer Charlie Vail who built the first highway through the area and in December 1962 Vail was opened and eventually became the largest ski area in North america.
