MONTEREY LOCAL HISTORY
Monterey was first named Vizcaino in 1602, but was not actually colonized until much later in 1770. Even then Monterey did not grow to any size worth mentioning as the US takeover and the Gold Rush made sure that people were immigrating to other areas of North America. Hence the city has been little more than a backwater place.

The city was kept alive during its early years by a booming whaling industry which lasted till 1880, when sardine fishing and packaging stepped in to take its place. But in the early 1950’s all the sardines disappeared and since it’s many packing plants have been converted into huge souvenir mall and tourist destinations.

But in the early 1950’s all the sardines disappeared and since it’s many packing plants have been converted into huge souvenir mall and tourist destinations.

Attractions: Cannery Row – In the early 1900’s the street of Cannery Row was crowded with sardine packing plants and the like, but today it has transformed into the tourist center of Monterey. Mini-malls, bars, and a small carnival complex can now be seen on the street in place of the old packing plants.

Great Cannery Row Mural – This awesome mural, which can be found in Cannery Row, is definitely worth special mention. A 400 ft. construction-site barrier on the 700 block has been covered, by local artists, with images of Monterey in the 30’s. An artistic journey back through time which must be seen.

Monterey Bay Aquarium – This aquarium provides visitors with a look at some of the more interesting sea and plant life of the great Pacific Ocean. The world’s largest viewing window is found here and on the other side of it you’ll see an enormous marine habitat containing green sea turtles, giant ocean sunfish, large fearsome sharks, and colorful yellow and blue tuna. A word to the wise: Pick your tickets up the day before if possible as the lines are very long. This will save you 20 to 40 minutes of standing around waiting.

Point Lobos Reserve – In the nearby town of Carmel is the massive 550-acre Point Lobos Nature Reserve. With the use of binoculars beautiful wild life such as sea lions, seals, otters, brown pelicans, and gulls can be seen from the many pathways along the side of the cliffs. It also has many look out points and tidal pools which are a perfect way to view the local whale migration which happens every winter through to mid spring. The reserve in very popular with skin-divers and day-hikers.

Pacific Grove – Another nearby attraction is the small town Pacific Grove, at the end of the peninsula. One of the peninsula’s best beaches can be found here, but the real treat happens during the winter months. An orange and black blanket is formed on the trees near Point Pinos lighthouse by hundreds of thousands of golden Monarch butterflies trying to escape the winter chill.

MONTEREY RESTAURANTS Add your favourite restaurant
Fisherman’s Wharf – Probably the most popular local venue, Fisherman’s Wharf is the place for seafood. Smoked salmon sandwiches are just one of the local delicacies. The prices are quite expensive so go a little earlier in the evening and have the early-bird special.

Fishwife Restaurant – Another local favorite for those on a slightly smaller budget is the Fishwife. Here you can find great food at reasonable prices in a homely atmosphere. 1996 Sunset Drive. (Tel: 375-7107)

1001 Nights – If seafood is just not quite your thing or for something different, try out this modest Middle Eastern restaurant. The huge all-you-can-eat buffet at around $8 is a real selling point. 444 Alvarado St. (Tel: 372-3663)

La Boheme – Come and experience fine dining in this restaurant built as a French country hotel replica. The dishes and décor transport you across the ocean for a brief period to the French country side. A set menu consisting of multi-course meals plus wine and service for around $17 can be ordered. Dolores St. (Tel: 624-7500)

MONTEREY BARS & CLUBS Add your favourite bar & club
The Firehouse – In this old brick fire station, which used to function years ago, you’ll find a colorful and chic cocktail lounge. Drinks are decently priced, but make sure to come on the weekend as there is free live music. 414 Calle Principal (Tel: 649-3016)

The Club of Monterey – For those interested in the local clubbing scene, come and join the young hip crowd at this DJ-dance club. Stick shooters can be found downstairs at the pool table and dart boards. Cover charge ranges from cheap to pricey, there is no way of telling before hand. Live acts are also found here on occasion. Del Monte St. (Tel: 646-9244)

Monterey Brewing Company – At this oddly titled nightclub, one of Cannery Rows many bars and nightclubs, live rock and blues bands can be seen nightly. Good lagers and ales are on tap and the bar food is not bad either. 700 Cannery Row (Tel: 375-3634)
