The University of California - University Avenue and Oxford Street. One of the best universities in the states. The scene of the anti-war movement of the 60s and many other American movements. The free guided tours leave on weekdays and include the campus, library's, campinale, student museum's and the guides will regale you with all the interestig times the university has gone through.
Lawrence Hall of Science - One Centennial Drive. The science museum has something for everyone. The lots of hands on exhibits will please the kids, while educating them at the same time. An Earthquake simulation will scare the hell out of you, and there are areas for science experiments. This state of the art facility will amuse for at least 4 hours.
Greek Theatre - This is an on campus ampitheatre that seats 8,000 outdoors. The sound and stage is amazing and thereis always something going on here. It can get a bit chilly, so bring a blanket and maybe enjoy a picnic on the lawn before the show.

Skates on the Bay - 100 Seawall Drive, Located in west Berkeley off fourth street. This is an unusual and romantic restaurant, built on stilts over the water. With an unbeatable view of the Golden Gate Bridge and bay.The menu is superb and choice extensive, food and service are renowned and the wine list does not dissapoint.
Cha Am - 1543 Shattuck Ave, This very popular Thai restaurant is situated in the northern part of Berkeley. This award winning diner consistantly serves the best in Asian cuisine. Cha Am is also a lovely dining experience with it's enclosed patio, gracious and pleasant service and the reasonable prices.
Vik's Chaat House - 724 Allston Way, Located in the Fourth Street area. This is an unusual eating establishment. Chaat is the Hindu word for snack. The locals go crazy about the tasty Asian snacks served here. A big crowd builds up for lunch and the Californians can experience a little taste of the east.
Chez Panisse - 1517 Shattuck Ave, One of the best restaurants in the downtown area and it's easy to see why. A different set menu is offered nightly that offers three or four courses of the most delicious dining. This is one restaurant to experience Californian Cuisine at it's best. There is also a less expensive cafe upstairs.

Regional Parks Botanic Garden at Tilden - Located in the Berkeley hills, this is the botanic gardens for the area and contains nearly every plant and flower that grows in California.The garden is divided into 10 sections, from the southern desserts to the rainy north. There is a visitors centre that sells plants and they host lectures and slide shows by well known Botanists.
Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve - Stonewall Road and Dwight Way in the hills of Berkeley and easy to get to from town, The park is 205 acres and has several beautiful hiking trails and you can also bike through the park. Kept in pristine condition by the parks department and a worthwhile outing.
Eastshore State Park - Marina Boulevard and University Avenue, This massive park offers fabulous views of the San Francisco bay and plans are afoot to have a marina on the shore. Great place for a family picnic and some scenic walks. |

College Avenue - This is the shopping street in the Elmwood area, offering lovely small boutiques, Quaint gift shops and charming restaurants and coffee shops. This street is popular for it's designer woman's clothing outlets and is an all together pleasant shopping experience.
Fourth Street Shopping District - One of those formally run down areas that has been transformed into a lively and vibey district. Find some undiscovered delights as you explore this delightful area. Little specialised deli's mix with boutiques and atmospheric bistros to make this a great shopping trip.
Telegraph Avenue Street Vendors - This popular market started in the hippie era of the 60s with students selling their crafts. It is now that and much more. You can buy just about anything here and it's a great place to hunt for that elusive present for the folks back home. Open 7 days and in the summer goes into the night. |
