The city of Mobile was founded by a French community back in 1702. Since then it has had Spanish, English, Sovereign Alabama, Confederate, and American flags flown over the city. This is clearly seen in the city’s architecture, which is a mix of Spanish and French historical forts, and Victorian homes that can be seen lining nearly all the city streets.
This town is used as a huge paper manufacturing center, which explains its very busy port. In early spring Mardi Gras, now better known as Fat Tuesday, is held in the city streets. – It is in fact the original USA city to do so, as New Orleans only caught on several years later.

Bellingrath Gardens – A highly rated home and garden magazine, Southern Living, has ranked Bellingrath Gardens as one of the top three public gardens in the entire United States. Take a stroll through its grounds, roughly 900-acre, which features a stunning bayou boardwalk and beautiful lush rose and oriental gardens. 12401 Bellingrath Gardens Rd. (Tel: 973-2217)
Spanish Plaza – True to its name this particular plaza in Mobile really feels and looks like Spain. The plaza is located by the joining of Hamilton and Government St., and honors Mobiles sibling city (Malaga, Spain). Attractive fountains rise into the air, where Spanish flags can be seen blowing in the wind.
USS Alabama – This vessel can be seen east of town at Battleship Park, where it is now permanently moored. It is a living legend, due to the fact that it is one of the few surviving ships that fought in every major Pacific battle during World War II. Children and adults alike will enjoy exploring the ship through its many open portholes and passageways. (Tel: 433-2703)
Phoenix Fire Museum – Another attraction that will be loved by the whole family is this incredibly well preserved fire station turned museum. Inside you’ll find restored and polished steam fire engines, with all the shining brass bells and trumpets still in good working condition. 203 S. Clairborne St.

Wintzell’s Oyster House – This local favorite seafood restaurant serves oyster a mind boggling 12 different ways, each one an adventure for your taste buds. Other good-value seafood dishes are also on offer. 605 Dauphin St (Tel: 432-4605)
Lumber Yard – This restaurant, including a full-service bar with happy hour (which actually lasts 3 hours), serves up stunning oven baked pizza. For the more healthy living folk, a nice selection of sandwiches and salads are also available. 2617 Dauphin St. (Tel: 476-4609)
Solomon’s – This is the place where local college students choose to hangout. Solomon’s is a good mixture of a typical pool hall and a pub. Massive sub woofers blast out the latest music over the 18 pool tables and dart boards that fill the floor space. Happy hour lasts 8 hours from 11am till 7pm. 5753 Old Shell Rd. (Tel: 344-0380)
Dreamland – If you are in the mood for turf, step over to Dreamland. It has two items on the menu: whole slab or half slab of the best ribs that you’ll ever taste in your life. The meat is smoked right in the back of the establishment. Chicken is also available at decent prices. Make sure to book as it is very popular. 3314 Old Shell Rd. (Tel: 479-9898)

| The Exploreum – The Exploreum is the perfect place to lose the kids for a few hours. It offers a hands-on journey through science, history and space that any child will find incredibly interesting and enjoyable.
