HUNTSVILLE LOCAL HISTORY
Huntsville origionaly called Twickenham was named after the towns first settler, a Virginian named John Hunt. The town was first a sleepy centre for cotton but after world war two, took great steps forward as the army consolidated its misile and rocket reasearch in the town. German scientist Dr Wernher Von Braun worked in Huntsville and is renowned for helping to build Explorer 1 and the Saturn 5, the countries first satelites.

HUNTSVILLE ATTRACTIONS Add your favourite attraction
US Space and Rocket Centre - the huge centre contains a facinating array of technoloical exhibits as well as a weightlessness simulator, interactive displays and an IMAX theatre. Outside the centre, non functioning rockets are displayed including the massive Saturn 5 rocket which is laid on its side and is four storeys tall. Open daily 9am to 6pm.

Hunstville Depot Museum - located at 320 Church street. The museum tells the story of Huntsville's past, depicting the cotton industry and railroad history of the town. Open Tuesday to saturday 9am to 5pm.

Alabama Constitution Village - located at 109 Gates Ave. Let the costumed guides lead you through this interesting living history museum depicting life from 1805 to 1819. The village includes a library, post office, old fashioned confectionery shop and cabinet makers shop. The village commerorates the palce where the 1819 constitution convention took place and if you visit in December you may see the enchanting Santa's Village.

Harmony Park Safari - located at 431 Clouds Cove Road. This lovely nature reserve is home to a variety of free ranging exotic and endangered wildlife. On the route through the park you can see camels, buffalo, zebras, alligators and ostriches. Open March to November 10am to sunset.

Huntsville Museum of Art - located at 300 Church Street. The museum diplays works of art by regional artists and displays from other museums as well as between six and eight travelling exhibitions throught the year.

HUNTSVILLE RESTAURANTS Add your favourite restaurant
Ol Heidelberg - located at 6125 University Drive. Try a taste of Germany in the heart of the south. This restaurant serves great German specialities such as Wiener Schnitzel and Sauerkraut.

Eunices Country Kitchen - located at 1006 Andrew Jackson Way. This restaurant on the western fringes of downtown Huntsville serves delicious southern style home cooked breakfasts and is a great inexpensive meeting spot. Closed Tuesdays.

Lonestar Steakhouse and Saloon - located at 5901 University Drive. The family style restaurant is decorated and furnished in a western style and specialises in grilled steaks that are cooked to your requirements.

Jazz factory - located at 109 North Side Square. A jazz theme runs through this fantastic restaurant. Enjoy delicious modern Californian style cuisine surrounded by neo classical and contemporary style 1920's Victorain decor. Upstairs there is a well stocked martini bar with pool tables and live music. Reservations are recommended.

Outback Steakhouse - located at 4777 Whitesburg Drive. For a touch of Australia in Alabama, head to this restaurant with its wood finished dinning room. Outback's speciality is its mouth watering cooked to order steaks and friendly atmosphere.

HUNTSVILLE PARKS & GARDENS Add your favourite park & garden
Huntsville Botanical Garden - located at 4747 Bob Wallace Ave. 112 acres of stunning gardens and walking paths. The gardens feature an enchanting seasonal butterfly house, tea room, picnic area and pavillion as well as a Spring Festival of flowers and the galaxy of lights held at Thanksgiving and New Years Eve. Open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm, Sunday 1pm to 5pm.

Big Spring Park - the lagoon forms part of the Indian Creek Canal that was used to transport cotton. Today the lagoon is home to fish and ducks and the limestone spring near which Huntsville was founded is in the park. Big Spring also hosts various concerts and festivals throughtout the year.

HUNTSVILLE CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES Add your favourite children's spot
Early Works Childrens Museum - situated at 404 Madison Street. Let your children interact with history in this museum that houses various entertaining and educational hands on displays. Exhibits include a 46 foot keel boat, talking clock and talking tree. Open September to May Saturday 9am to 4pm, June to August Saturday 10am to 5pm.

Old MacDonalds Petting Zoo - located at 7826 U.S Hwy. A lovely place for younger children, the zoo allows petting and feeding of domestic, unusual and exotic birds and animals. There is also a woodlwnd area, snack bar, picnic tables, pond and playground area.

Benton H Wilcoxon Municipal Ice Complex - situated at 3185 Leeman Ferry Road. The best dual purpose ice rink in the southeast, the rink has public sessions as well as ice hockey, hosts birthday parties and the Huntsville skating school provides skating lessons.
