Acapulco takes its name from a Nahoa Indian myth about two young lovers. They were barred from marrying each other. The warrior cried so much that his tears melted his body leaving a muddy pool. The girl in question became a cloud; wandering the sky until she located the pool, then fell, like a waterfall over the reeds to be united forever where Acapulco stands today.
This ancient legend is difficult to associate with what Acapulco has become. A thriving, modern city on Vegas lines, with sprawling hotels and high-rise buildings, it’s a city that never sleeps.

Quebrada (la) - This show takes place daily between 6pm-8pm. Daring young locals jump from the sheer cliffs into the sea, some from a height of over 110 feet. Torches light the last dive of the night.
Carnival - This weeklong event takes place before the Lent holiday. Everyone is out on the streets to enjoy the carnival rides, candyfloss and general revelry. As the evening hours approach, the streets are cordoned off for parties and parades and the chances of you having a quiet night are instantly dispelled.
Catedral (La) – Situated in one of the oldest parts of the city, this church was built in 1930. The dome is built in the style of traditional mosques, accompanied by two Byzantine looking towers. Inside can be found beautiful yellow and gold tiles, walls painted white and blue and a statue of Christ lying in a crystal coffin.

Fish is the dish of choice in Acapulco. From tuna and swordfish to shrimps and mussels, this city caters for all fish tastes. A particular ‘custom’ in these parts is to soak the fish in limejuice before cooking, which can be a jolt to the palate at first.
With Mexico being home to so many wonderful vegetables, fruit, spices, corn and chocolate, there are hundreds of dishes that can be chosen, wherever one is travelling.

Coyuca 22 – Caleta - Specialising in seafood, this restaurant comes highly recommended by the locals and travellers alike.
Madejras – Las Brisas - Having recently celebrated their 25th Anniversary in the business, this fine restaurant serves international cuisine and boasts a spectacular view of the bay.
Su Casa – behind the Convention Centre – Renowned for their huge margaritas, Su Casa serves reasonably priced steaks and seafood from this restaurant overlooking the city.

Palladium – Las Brisas – The biggest and best nightclub in the city. Take in its amazing view, good music, friendly staff and a mind-blowing show at 4.00am. A word of warning – get there early.
Ninas – front of the Convention Centre - A salsa club that is very popular with the locals featuring live entertainment, music and dancing.
B & B – Out of Town – Featuring music from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, this club, which attracts a slightly older crown, is the best place for dancing, in the city.

Caleta - If you don’t mind being continually pestered by vendors, this beach in the old part of the city is great for swimming and is a popular place for families with kids.
Condesa Beach – centre of Acapulco Bay – A very popular beach with the locals and tourists, along with the vendors.
Revolcadero Beach – Princess Hotel – If you don’t mind taking a fairly long bus trip, you’ll enjoy this beautiful, semi private beach away from the vendors.

Fermin – near La Diana – If you want great prices without having to bargain, ask for Fermin himself, who is always on hand to sell souvenirs, jewellery and sombreros.
Zocalo – the older part of the city – Here you’ll find hundreds of shops selling crafts, gifts, and clothing and just about anything you can imagine. Although a fascinating place, keep away after dark.
ACA Bronze – Costera M. Aleman 125 – Original art in bronze and other metals can be found at this interesting shop.

Aca-Zoo – Roqueta Island - Take a glass-bottomed boat from Caletilla beach to reach the island, where you ascend a hill set with tropical plants to see a variety of animals including elephants, giraffes, monkeys and snakes. This is a definite ‘must-see’, especially for the kids.
CiCi – Av. Costera - This water park features water slides, toboggans, dolphin encounters, seal shows and Sky Coaster, a ride that will have anyone screaming at the tops of their voices.
Park Papagayo – The Costera - Filled with carnival rides, go-karts, roller skating, skate boarding and many other attractions will have the whole family occupied for hours.
