Kalkan was settled 200 years ago by people of both Greek and Turkish origin. It was a very important location as it was the only safe harbour between Kas and Fethiye. Cargo ships were loaded in the harbour to sail for destinations in the Ottoman Empire carrying various goods such as charcoal, silk from the Malberrey trees, olive oil which is still produced today, wine, cotton, grain, sesame seed, flour, grapes, acorns used for dye purposes, and lumber from the cedar and pine forests.
By the 20th century Kalkan had its own custom's house, as well as restaurants, a goldsmith, a shoemaker and a couple of tailors. In 1928 Kalkan had its first local elections and in 1937 the elementry school, which is still used today, was established.

| Kalamar Beach Club - by Ellie from United Kingdom - 2007-08-14 | | This beach club is definitely for the kids, the trampoline is excellent and the free pedalos and canoes are good too. Food quite expensive but nice. |

The Daphne Restaurant - If you are looking to get your gal in the mood, here is your answer - the most romantic place in the town. It has the most amazing views of the ocean and village, especially during sunset and on those heated summer evenings. They also serve some delicious dishes, which is a double bonus.
Belgin's Kitchen - Yaliboyu Mah, a wonderful place to just relax and have a bite at the same time. Seating is provided in the form of cushions strewn on the floor which adds to the relaxed atmosphere. A large menu with a variety of dishes and eats are available.
The Kleo Cafe - This restaurant is very conveniently located in the center of the town, only 100m away from the main beach. It serves the most delicious traditional Turkish cuisine and a mouth-watering buffet breakfast.
Korsan Restaurant - Situated on the beach front, this is most definitly the restaurant with the most amazing setting and views. The menu offers a wide selection of mouth-watering traditional Turkish cuisine, spanking fresh fish and their famous garlic bread which is baked to order.

| Atlantis - by Joan H from United Kingdom - 2006-03-05 | | Near the junction of the Kalamar Road and the main street into town. Awesome food, traditional Turkish but with a cosmopolitan twist. Best menu in town and the friendliest staff. We have never had a bad or indifferent meal here. Music is good too!! |
| Koske - by Dave beresford from United Kingdom - 2006-05-10 | | Wonderful for a special night out without breaking the bank. The staff are so attentive without being intrusive, and the decor is luxurious. As to the food, it is out of this world. |

| Foto'nun Yeri - by Tony & June from United Kingdom - 2006-09-11 | | The standard of dining in Kalkan is a wonderful surprise. With restaurant ownership shared between locals and Turks from Istanbul, a wider variation of Mediterranean cuisine is offered than perhaps might be expected from a Turkish town of this size. Certainly, the range and style of cuisine on offer exceeds what is generally available throughout coastal Turkey, for local delicacies go to Foto'nun Yeri in kalkan!enjoy your holiday in kalkan... |
| Marina Bar - by Vicki & Family from United Kingdom - 2006-09-22 | | We had two great nights here with Mario, George and staff. They made us so welcome with fantastic food, fine wine, great music and unbelievable dancing which all added to a great night for Kevins Birthday. Be warned we'll be back next year for Alans 60th. Can't wait !!!! |
| Moonlight Restaurant - by Vicky from Turkey - 2006-10-01 | | The best you will get - the staff were great!! Eddie loves to spin his LIPTONICE inflatable!!! If you go you will see what I mean.........miss it loads!!! |
| Deli Deli Tomato - by Kathleen from United Kingdom - 2007-03-31 | | Wonderful view, located next door to the post office, this recently re-vamped restaurant has everything to offer. Great for people watching, wonderful sea view and fantastic food. Everything available from breakfast to dinner - traditional turkish food combined with super home made cakes, salads, sandwiches and much more. The hot chocolate cake with cream was amazing. Be sure not to miss it when you are in Kalkan. |
| Trio - by Debbie Hyne from United Kingdom - 2007-04-21 | | We discovered this brand new restaurant on our Easter break in Kalkan. Perfect location right on the harbour front - we had a great view of the marina from our dinner table. Food wonderful - the Mediterranean Lamb was fabulous. Great vegetarian selection as well.Don't forget to leave room for the yummy desserts. Trio also has a lovely bar so it was nice to have a pre dinner drink watching the sunset. Ambience very relaxing - tasteful decor, great service and nice jazz playing in the background. Definitely worth a visit when you are in Kalkan. |
| Masala Zone - by Faisal from United Kingdom - 2007-04-24 | | Had an awesome night at this new and exciting Indian. Service was excellent and the people were really nice. I will be recommending this place to all friends who visit Kalkan.
Great views of the sea as the Indian is on the beach front at Kalkan. |
| Coast Restaurant Kalkan - by Kath W from United Kingdom - 2007-05-02 | | Modern contemporary restaurant with a fabulous roof top terrace and a great indoor bar lounge with comfy sofas. Simple clean lines and drift wood art gives a hint of the shore line along this part of the coast.
Menu consists of a mixture of old "forgotten" Ottoman dishes and modern up to date Pan Asian food. All exceptionally well presented and above all, are tasty and carefully created.
Would recommend it to those who like to experience a high-class service, excellent food and a welcoming comfortable environment.

| Coast - by Jan from United Kingdom - 2007-05-02 | | There are a great many restaurants in Kalkan but if you want to try somewhere that offers both traditional Turkish and bang up to date Pan Asian food then this restaurant really is worth a try. They have researched old Torkish recipes from the Sultans Palace and recreated them which is a fabluous idea and a real dining experience. Great bar for lounging and roof top terrace, and friendly waiting staff who are attentive but not pushy. As a single woman I felt especially comfortable there. |
| Tricky Dickys - by Holly from United Kingdom - 2007-05-03 | | Great restaurant near edge of beach |
| Istanbul Restaurant - by Grahame Cox from United Kingdom - 2007-05-20 | | The Istanbul Restaurant has only been in operation for just over three (3) months and already has an excellent reputation for its authentic Turkish quisine. The owner of the restaurant Vidat prepares and cooks all the food himself - although the restaurant is comparatively smal in size compared to many of the other eating establishments around, it is nearly always full and it is recommended that one should reserve a table in order not to be disappointed. The menu is quite extensive and very reasonably priced as many of Kalkan's local residence eat there as well - which says a lot for its reputation. The restaurant itself is located on the left handside of the road as you walk past the Utopia and Moonlight Bars. |
| Turkuaz - by Abby from United Kingdom - 2007-05-20 | | I've been coming to Kalkan for many years now, and every year there are many new restaurants, that are not always that good. About Turkuaz I was pleasantly surprised. The view is stunning, and the food is delicious. This is one of the places where you will find proper Turkish dishes. Good atmosphere, very laid back, we definetly didn't regret it, it's worth a visit! |
| Sofra - by Icaru from Turkey - 2007-05-22 | | We have been living in Kalkan for several years and continue to think that Sofra's rooftop restaurant offers one of the best meals available in Kalkan. Somewhat pricey but not the same food you find everywhere. Cozy, original dishes, good wine list, good service, open until end of November. |
| The Ivy Roof Terrace - by Sophie from United Kingdom - 2007-05-24 | | On a recent holiday to Kalkan I had the pleasure of dining at a beautiful roof terrace restaurant called The Ivy. It is located at the bottom of the main shopping street near the harbour steps above a sweet cafe called Cafe Del Mare (I think!) The entrance is in a cobbled side alley full of beautiful plants and flowers. The menu is a mixture of Turkish, Mediterranean & Asian fusion dishes. I had the sweet chilli salmon and it was delicious. Also I recommend you try the warm halva dessert. The staff were very friendly and professional and the views were the best I experienced, uninterrupted of Kalkan bay, no other roof tops in the way. The restaurant is decorated very nicely and very picturesque at night with all the tables lit by candle lanterns. The chairs are very comfortable and they play great jazz & world music. It has a different feel to the others and I just loved my two evenings there. I highly recommend it. |

| Heavenly food in Turkuaz restaurant - by Maria from United Kingdom - 2007-06-02 | | I've been to Kalkan many times and every time I like to try some of the new restaurants (there are quite a lot of new ones every year...). I just came back form a one-week trip and we found a new restaurant near the white mosque. It was called Havana before, but I never ate there, the new owners named it Turkuaz, which is Turkish for turqoise, as a hommage to the beautiful colour of the sea in this area. And although all roof terrace restaurants in Kalkan claim to have the best view in town, I was really impressed by this one. We came back for lunch especially to enjoy the view during daytime! The food was absolutely fabolous ;), a very relaxed atmosphere, definitely not as expensive as some of the other restaurants in Kalkan nowadays. Very friendly waiters, not pushy and not scared of a joke. You'll find there menu on the way down form the mainstreet to the white mosque, the restaurant is next to the little park. In the night you can see their roof terrace from the main street: it's the one with the lovely blue tablecloths!

| Rendez Vous - by Ellie from United Kingdom - 2007-08-14 | | This restaurant is quietly tucked away in a little side street, serving simple but delicious meals and is cheap. This restaurant doesnt have a sea view but the food makes up for that. |
| The Olive Garden - by Lynne Matthews from United Kingdom - 2007-08-24 | | A trip to the Olive Garden is a must in Kalkan. It is situated above the Merkez Bar and I think owned by the same family? The food is fantastic, very, very tasy and the staff are so friendly and attentive. It is an attractive place, has a lovely atmosphere, mellow music, views across the town and once you have been there you will definately return. There are specials on every day of the week and the menu is large enough to keep going back. We did every other night as the food was so good but having said that there is plenty of choice in kalkan but everyone has a favourite and this is mine. Everyone I have recommended the restaurant too has agreed and are now repeat customers. Try it and see for yourself as sometimes people miss it as they walk past the bar. |
| Gironda Restaurant - by Graham Watkins from United Kingdom - 2007-10-08 | | The Gironda restaurant is one, if not the best restaurant in Kalkan. Excellent surroundings, service & cuisine. The atmosphere is perfect for that intimate meal or for a group. Hard to beat! |

| Alternatif Restaurant - by Rupert from United Kingdom - 2008-03-14 | | What a great evening we all had, and the steaks were the best we have ever had.
The staff were fantastic and very attentive but not overbearing. The evening went on well into the early hours. This Restaurant must be on your list of places to visit. |
| Ali Baba's Restaurant - by Bill from United Kingdom - 2008-05-06 | | The best you will get - the staff were great. Great for people watching, wonderful sea view and fantastic food. Would recommend it to those who like to experience a high-class service, excellent food and a welcoming comfortable environment. The staff is perfect. |
| Alternatif - by raf from United Kingdom - 2008-05-08 | | What a great night of food wine and laughter. The Alternatif has the most amazing food, the new chiefs menu makes it hard to choose what you want to eat.
And the staff were happy and friendly, a must when visiting Kalkan. |

| The Moonlight Bar - by Jessica from United Kingdom - 2006-07-18 | | I enjoyed many nights in the Moonlight, it is one of the best bars in Kalkan. It is in the center of the town, so has a great buzz to it. They play music for all tastes and have a dance floor, which I spent most of my time on! The barmen and owner are so friendly and make the bar what it is! |
| Moonlight Bar - by Francesca from United Kingdom - 2006-08-07 | | This has to be the best bar in Kalkan! We spent most of our time here and were made to feel so welcome! If you are in Kalkan do not miss out on this bar! Thank you Yalcin & Haci!!! |
| Yatch Point - by Adam from United Kingdom - 2006-09-01 | | Dont bother with the moon light bar, its where all the larrys go, if you want a really good night, start off in photoes (behing the taxi rank) with a big group, play some drinking games, then mosey on down to the yatch point! heavy |
| Ice Blue Bar - by Grahame Cox from United Kingdom - 2007-05-20 | | What used to be the Sultans Bar located opposite Belgins Kitchen has now been transformed into a modern continental style bar / cafe that offers fresh local produce, premium beers, spirits, cocktails and tasty meals in a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere with background music that you can here oneself talk above. Well done Oz and Trevor |

People who worship the sun will most definitly appreciate the pebbled town beach of Kalkan. It features one of the most beautiful beaches you will ever come across due to its abundance of unspoilt beauty. The town also boasts numerous private 'beach clubs' built into the cliffs from where you can dive in and snorkel or swim in crystal clear water. Alternatively you can take a traditional wooden boat, called a Gulet, out into the bay and feast on a barbecue of fresh fish.
Kaputas Beach - A gorgeous secluded swimming cove nestled at the foot of the mountain. The water is always a beautifully clear shade of turqoise and is the ideal place for children to splash around in the water.
|
| 16km of unspoilt sand - Patara Beach - by Bridget from United Kingdom - 2006-10-20 | | Patara Beach just a 20 minute bus ride from Kalkan has one of Turkey's best beaches. 16km of unspoilt sand as far as the eye can see. No mass tourism due to the turtles that next on the beach and pure escapism. A must visit for a anyone travelling to Kalkan. |
| Kalkan Beach Club - by Hannah from United Kingdom - 2007-08-18 | | Kalkan beach club is more for if you’re taking children away with, as there is a small pebbly beach and water slide, which is 5 ytl for the whole day. This beach club is definitely a yes! With free beds and very cheap but amazing food. |
