TOP DESTINATIONS Add your favourite destination
Stockholm – This city is one of the most beautiful national capitals in the world. Explore the medieval section of Gamla Stan and the many museums. Due to the watery nature and the many islands and archipelagos of Stockholm you might want to find a boat and explore those as well.

Gothenburg – This city is situated on the west coast of Sweden, and has magnificent harbour facilities, fantastic museums, which hold archeological, local and historical collections and impressive collections of paintings by Rubens, Van Gogh and Rembrandt to name just a few. Gothenburg is also home to the world’s best amusement park. The Liseberg is the most popular attraction in Sweden with the prime attraction being the Spaceport, which dominates the park at a height of 150 meters.

Vadstena – Located along Lake Vattern, this is one of the most pleasant towns in Sweden. The Renaissance castle Vadstena slot looks out over the harbour and the lake beyond. Some very impressive artifacts can be found inside, like some period furniture, paintings, which include a Van Dyck.

Sarek National Park – This Park covers an area of 2000 square kilometers. It comprises 100 glaciers and countless peaks. This beautiful landscape is very demanding. There are no huts and very few bridges, only for the very tough and experienced climbers, who need to do their homework before going climbing.

WHEN TO GO Add your opinion
The best time to visit Sweden is between late May and late July. Many youth hostels, attractions and camping grounds are only open in summer. To travel in winter needs to be well planed and restricted. The big cities are in full swing all year round.

CULTURE Add your opinion
Sweden is best known for its writers, such as widely translated children’s writer Astrid Lindgren creator of Pippi Longstocking. And the best known in all of Sweden is Alfred Nobel, the first patron of the Nobel Institute and the coveted international prizes.

GREAT OUTDOORS Add your great outdoor
White-Water Rafting – Sweden has some of the best white-water rafting in Europe. There are short and comfortable rides through peaceful landscapes to heart-stopping races on fast-running rivers. There is also a chance to take easy white-water trips in paddleboats.

Skiing – In Lapland you can enjoy downhill skiing as well as cross-country skiing all year round. Serious skiers can head for the Kebnekaise mountain station, where they can combine skiing with dog sledding and other winter sports.

Archipelago – These island are located around the small town of Hudiksval on the Bothnian coast. They are the most beautiful in the north of Sweden. At one stage there were 50 fishing villages and harbours located in the archipelago, but today the fisher’s homes serve as summer cottages for vacationers. There is unique species of flora and fauna that the Swedish government has made it a nature reserve.

BEACHES Add your favourite beach
Bothnian Coast – The land is a combination of thousands of small lakes, rivers and unspoiled coastlines as well as vast forest of pine and spruce, high mountains and low farmlands. In summer time there is 24 hours of daylight, so this is a great vacation place for many of the local Swedes who maintain summer homes in the area.

The Swedish Riviera – Windsurfing is a major regional sport here, where many champions have been produced. There are steady winds and shallow shoreline waters, which provide ideal conditions. There are plenty of public access to docks, swimming areas and barbecues. Some of the lakes in the areas even have water lilies and flowering meadows that extend down to the water’s edge. The lakes also offer a great chance to catch some perch and pike, with many salmon trout make their way from the Atlantic to Halland’s rivers.

MOVING AROUND Add your opinion
Sweden’s roads are of a high standard, with the only hazard being their popularity with moose, reindeer and elk around dawn and dusk. There are daily domestic flights that fly around the country. With Sweden’s extensive bus and train systems, flying is unnecessary unless you are in a hurry. The trains are generally quicker than buses, but once you get of the beaten track you will need to use the buses.

NATIONAL FESTIVALS & HOLIDAYS Add your favourite festival
Midsummer – This festival is held at the summer solstice and is Sweden’s most enthusiastically celebrated festival.

Lucia Festival – Held on 13 December celebrates the coming of Christmas.

Easter – In Sweden Easter incorporates the pagan belief that witches hang out with the devil in hell for the duration. Kids dress up as witches and knock on doors in the neighbourhood where sweets are exchanged for drawings.

Walpurgis Night – This pagan festival celebrating the end of the winter with bonfires and fireworks takes place on 30 April.

KreftFest - by Laila Beverly from United States - 2007-09-15
August in Sweden is the time of the Kreft Fest, or Crayfish Parties! Fantastic!
