Plaza del Pilar - This vast square lined with magnificent examples of different architectural styles, is Zaragoza's most impressive attraction, and a good point from which to start exploring the city.
Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Pilar - The enormous Baroque Basilica honouring the patron saint after whom half the female Spanish population is named, dominates the skyline with brilliantly coloured tiled domes. Magnificent frescoes by Velasquez, Goya, and Francisco Bayeau adorn the interior, and the original wooden pillar of the Basilica is encased in silver. From the vantage point of the towers visitors gain magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding Zaragoza.
Palacio de la Aljaferis - This awe-inspiring stone fortification was the inspiration for Verdi's opera, Il Travatore, and is just as spectacular today as it was after the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in the 8th century.
Museo de Zaragoza - With an extensive collection of medieval Aragonite paintings, and a room devoted entirely to Goya and his magical works of art, this is one museum no art lover should miss.

Lai Lai - C. Don Jaime, 34. So, you are an American, toting a Japanese camera, and wearing Spanish espadrilles, why not complete the picture with a meal at a Chinese restaurant? Lai Lai restaurant serves excellent Chinese food at prices that would be hard to beat anywhere.
La Zanahoria - C. Tarragona, 4. young locals hook-up and hang out at this small, friendly restaurant, where the house specials are salads and vegetable quiches.

If you have kept yourself in trim by swimming, surfing and other means, then spoil yourself and step in to Fantoba where they have been creating their 'frutas de Aragon', chocolate-dipped candied fruits, for the past 145 years. If you are already an overweight slob, then go ahead, celebrate your self-indulgence with one of these delights from heaven, and confound the critics.

Wooloomooloo - C. Espoz y Mina, 19. This Australian bar cum disco attracts every breed of hipster from every nation, who crowd in for the midnight drink specials and boogie to popular music.
La Casa del Loco - C. Mayor, 10-12. The international 20 to 30 something crowd pack out La Casa, for its wide-ranging choice of music and frequent concerts.
Kitsch - C. Fernando el Catolico, If you are in your twenties and looking for a spot where can get wild in like company, then Kitsch is the place for you and a night to remember.
Oasis - C. Boggiero, 28. Although this nightspot is open to people of all ages, the rather stiff prices keep hoi polloi at bay and therefore attract a somewhat better heeled clientele. |
