Palacio de Villadompardo - Pl.Santa Luisa Marillac. There are hot mineral springs in the mountains, 3 kilometres to the south of Jaen and this Renaissance building houses Spain's largest ancient restored baths, dating back to the 11th century. Roman had a huge influence on the architecture and infrastructure of Spain during their occupation from the 3rd century AD onwards. As in the rest of the Roman occupied world, they left their legacy of a good soaking bathtub-cleanliness is next to Godliness after all.
Castillo de Santa Catalina - This castle erected in 1246 by Ferdinand the 3rd is perched up on a hill-making it difficult for the invaders to attack and darn awkward for sightseers to get to as well. A 3km walk for the energetic tourist, or a taxi ride up from the bus station may appeal if you believe in conserving energy for more entertaining activities.
Baeza - Take a day trip out to the lovely town of Baeza, an hour away from Jaen. If you want to experience a town unspoilt by tourism and a perfect reflection of Old Spain this is definately a place to visit. Aim for the Barrio Monumental for starters, then to the Antigua Universidad and Palacio de Jabalquinto with its ancient courtyard with orange tree. Baeza's oldest church dating back to 13th century times is also worth a visit, as is the nearby cathedral. |
