Huesca has a recorded history tracable back for more than two thousand five hundred years.
At that time the Iberian settlement of Bolskan came into existance and became known as an important coin minting site.
The Romans came, saw and conquered; changing the town's name to Osca.
The Romans established a senate here, as well as a centre for higher learning, which later became known as the Sertorian University.
The area has always enjoyed the protection of the natural barrier of the Pyrenian mountains, which deter all but the most persistant sojourners from the North. |

Iglesia de San Pedro el Viejo - Plaza de San Pedro. This Benedictine monastery is one of the oldest churches in Spain, founded at the end of the 11th century. Of particular note are the Gothic choir stalls and Romanesque cloister. The building is the final resting place of King Alfonso I the Warrior and Ramiro II the Monk.
Huesco Museum - Plaza Universidad.This museum was founded in 1873 and houses a variety of exhibits ranging from a collection of Goya paintings "Los toros de Burdeos", to remains of the necropolis of Coscujuela de Fantova and Iberian and Roman archeological pieces.
Monasterio de San Juan de la Pena - Castiello de Jaca. Visit the hallowed halls of this monastery of which the the oldest part dates back to 920, built in the Mozarab style and served as a hermitage church. It was rebuilt in 1025 in the Romanesque style and has the most wonderful Romanesque cloister. The newer Baroque style building was built in the 17th century, in the Baroque style. |

Taverna de Lillas Pastia - Plaza de Navarra. Tucked away in one of the the old salons in the Casino, this restaurant is well known in Huesca for its fine dining and professional service. Here you can sample some of Spains finest wines, they have a selection of more than 800 to choose from.The truffle dishes come highly recommended.
Las Torres - Calle María Auxiliadora. Perched in one of Huesca's tallest buildings, this restaurant offers delicious regional cuisine at a reasonable price and a well stocked wine cellar. |

Huesca has a rich cultural and natural heritage tat attracts thousands of visitors every year. A few kilometres from the capital is the Cañones de Guara Natural Park, a natural area suitable for practising outdoor sports like canyoning.
The Aragonese Pyrenees have countless attractions for tourists. Their most characteristic landscape is formed by summits and green valleys, like those of Ansó, Hecho and Tena, the latter declared a biosphere reserve. The Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park is, because of its fauna and high ecological value one of the most important protected areas in the Pyrenees. For this reason Monte Perdido has been declared a World Heritage Site. At the foot of this mountain is the Parador at Bielsa, a welcoming mountain refuge on the banks of the River Cinca.
The great heights of the Pyrenees and the most southerly glaciers on the continent of Europe are found in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park and the Aneto peak (3.404 metros).
Winter sports lovers have the chance to enjoy some of the best ski stations in the whole country in the Huesca Pyrenees: Astún, Candanchú, Cerler, Formigal, Panticosa-Los Lagos, etc.
