Te Naveta d'es Tudons – You will find this “monument” beside the main road just 6km from Ciutadella. It was built by an unknown ancient culture and is seven metres high and fourteen metres long. The structure is made of enormous stone blocks stacked together using a dry-stone technique. The restricted entrance leads into a small antechamber, which leads on to the main chamber and it is here where the bones of the dead were put after the flesh had been stripped off. Throughout history the Menorcan's were extremely reluctant to go anywhere near these strange structures.
Trepuco site, Talayots – Mao. Talayots are ancient rock mounds, which are to be found all over the island. Local folklore has it that they were watchtowers, but few experts agree. The mounds do not have stairways in the interior, and most are to be found in the interior of the island. As yet no one has been able to pin down their origins. Megalithic taulas are enormous stones with another on top to form a T, they are around 4metres and can only be found in Menorca, are also a mystery. They seem to have no evident function, and they are nearly always to be found next to a talayot.
Monte Toro – The top of the mountain, at 357m, is the highest point of the island. It is a steep 3.2-km climb along a serpentine road. The views from the summit are fabulous, when the weather is clear you can see practically the whole of the island. Monte Toro has been a place of pilgrimage since medieval times. In the 17th century the Augustinians built a monastery and remains of the of the original building can still be seen. Today you will the site has been shared between a convent and an army outpost. You will find a church, gift shops, and a lovely café near the part of the convent open to the public.
Ciutadella – Take a trip to this beautiful town, known to Muslim's as Median Minurqa. It is sometimes called 'Vella i Bella', which translated means, the Old and the Beautiful. Ciutadella is an appealing city with a charming port and an historic old quarter, which are worth exploring.
