COSTA DE LA LUZ LOCAL HISTORY
The rapidly developing Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) is fast becoming the next tourist Mecca of Spain. It is generally divided into two sections, the western part being the coastline of the province of Huelva, and the eastern region, the coastline of the province of Cadiz. Stretching from Tarifa Point on the Straits of Gibralter to the mouth of the Guadiana River, the Luz coast forms the boundary with Portugal.

The point from where Magellan left in 1519 to sail around the world is located in Sanlucar de Barrameda, which Columbus also made as his homeport for his third trip to the New World. Sanlucar is more famous today though for its local sherry, Manzanilla, which is available from any of the bodegas in the city.

COSTA DE LA LUZ ATTRACTIONS Add your favourite attraction
Huelva – This sprawling, industrialized city, with a population of 141,000, fortunately still has some splendid old buildings, churches, and monuments, such as the Shrine of Nuestra Senora de la Cinta, and the 15th century Church of San Pedro, and of-course, Christopher Columbus’ home, where his commemorative monument also stands. Huelva is also a great base for visiting the nearby Coto Donana National Park, Marismas del Odiel wetlands, and the sites to do with good old Chris.

Cadiz – Standing on a peninsula that juts out into the bay, Cadiz is practically an island, surrounded almost completely by water. It has some beautiful and historical architecture such as the magnificent cathedral, and the churches of Santa Cruz and San Felipe Neri. Worth visiting as well are the grand mansions, Casa del Almirante and Casa de las Cadenas.

Cadiz Carnival – During the civil war, General Franco abolished the carnival in rebel areas, as it undermined social order and the people were generally having far too much fun. In 1937, Franco abolished the carnival totally, but it continued in Cadiz, and is one of the finest events in Spain.

Sanlucar de Barrameda – Famous for its Manzanilla sherry, Sanlucar is also the point from where Magellan left for his historic round the world in 1518, and is full of interesting architecture and historical points of interest. Which, depending on how much of the wine you have enjoyed, can fill a few hours of exploration.

Delgado Restaurant - Km. 2 Of The Local Road Sanlucar, Sanlucar De Barrameda, Cadiz. El Faro De Cadiz - C/ San Felix, 15, 11002 Cadiz. Although this restaurant is famous for its seafood dishes, it does also serve both meat and fish dishes. Restaurant Francisco la Fontanilla - Playa De La Frontera, 11140 Conil De La Frontera. This restaurant has been in business for the past 35 years, and the family atmosphere, great food, and perfect location, (looking out on to the sea) makes a meal here and event to be enjoyed, rather than just a re-fuelling exercise.
