Cagliari and the south of Sardinia - Cagliari has been the capital of Sardinia since Roman times and today it is still the biggest town on the island. The main attractions found here are the archeological museum with its amazing collection of nuraghic statuettes; the city walls with two Pisan towers; and the cathedral. At Nora, further down the coast, more ancient Roman ruins can be seen.
Costa Smeralda and the northeast of Sardinia - The Costa Smerald is one of the finest stretches of coast in the Mediterranean, and is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island. There are over 60 small islands just off the coast, with daily ferry services linking them to Sardinia. Santa Teresa di Gallura has some of the most outstanding coves and beaches.
Oristano and Nuoro eastern Sicily - Oristano is the smallest province of Sicily, with a rich Medieval history. Tharros is a great Punic-Roman town to visit and the riverside town of Bosa is a medieval gem, with its amazing fort. The Gennargentu mountains contain the island's highest peak, La Marmora at 1834m, and form the centre of the Barbagia region. |
