Named after the giant buried here by Poseidon, and said to be a stopping off place for the virgin Mary on her way to Cyprus to visit Lazarus.Possible to visit the monastery on the top, but only if you are a man and obtain a permit. Hike or take the road.

Philippi – North of Kavala and accessible by bus. The former city that the early missionaries Paul and Silas came to preach the Gospel. Not much left of the once great centre, but of much interest to Biblical scholars.

Castro – The well preserved castle of Kavala originating from the 5th century BC, before it fell into the hands of the Byzantines and then The Ottomans. The amphitheatre sometimes hosts concerts. Spectacular views of the town and island of Thassos in the south.
