The Old Town - In the late 17th century, the French came and totally destroyed the old medieval Heidelberg, including the castle. The town was rebuilt in Baroque style in the 18th century.
Church of the Holy Ghost - The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1398, but it was not completed until 1544. Unlike most other Gothic churches the facade of the Heiliggeistkirche is consistent -- you cannot distinguish the choir or naves from the outside. The gargoyles looking down on the south side are remarkably ugly.
Friedrich Ebert Memorial - The modest rooms of a small back-street apartment were the birthplace of Friedrich Ebert, who in 1920 was Germany's first democratically elected president. and leader of the doomed Weimar Republic. Display cases contain documents that tell the story of the tailor's son who took control of a country used to being ruled by the Kaiser.
