Frankfurt was established as a trading centre in Roman times and by the 12th century its trade fares were attracting Visitor’s from as far away as the Baltic and Mediterranean. Although Frankfurt bought its autonomy from Germany in 1372 for a fee of 8800 Guilden it was still occupied by invading forces on numerous occasions.
Frankfurt held an important position in the Holy Roman Empire of Germany until it ended in 1806, following that the a confederation of 35 states was formed with Frankfurt hosting its Reichstag
In 1848 Germanys first parliamentary delegation met in Frankfurt’s Paulskirche, an event that prompted US President John Kennedy to describe Frankfurt as “the cradle of democracy in Germany” over a century later. Frankfurt was virtually destroyed by Allied bombing during World War 11 and was later completely rebuilt into a modern metropolis with international appeal as the economic and transport centre of Germany.

Alte Oper – The Opera House is one of the few buildings in the city that is a completely reconstructed version of the one destroyed in World War 11. It was suggested that it be rebuilt in the modern style and the decision was put to the vote. The citizens voted to reconstruct the façade rather than completely demolishing the remains and starting anew.
Deutsches Filmmuseum – The museum exhibits the development of filmmaking in an entertaining interactive style. With themed exhibitions, premiers and an extensive archive of films it provides an entertaining day out.
Museum fur Kommunikation – A good one for the young and not so young with its hands on exhibits and invisible ink. The Cold War spying equipment is totally fascinating to would be James Bonds.
Romerberg – The centre of Alstadt contains what remains of Frankfurt’s medieval fountains and half-timbered architecture. The statue of Justice in the middle once spouted wine

Buffalo – Kaiserhofstr.18 This steak house is popular with the American community. Apart from the excellent steaks you can also get good tacos and enchiladas.
Eckstein – An der Staufenmauer 7. If you want to treat yourself try this very formal end expensive restaurant that serves the best of European haute cuisine.
Lalibela – Klingerstr 2. For a completely different experience go to this Ethiopian restaurant where eating with your fingers is the norm. Beleagured vegetarians will find a good range of dishes to choose from here.
Tse-Yang – Kaiserstr.67 Frankfurt’s leading Chinese restaurant, the business lunches are particularly good and excellent value for money.

Club Voltaire – Kleine Hochstr. 5 A diverse clientele meet here, musicians, Greens, political activists and gays amongst them to set the world to rights and to eat the reasonably priced, good bistro type food that is served here.
Altes Cafe Schneider – Kaiserstr. 12. Some of the best kaffe und kuchen is served in this popular traditional cafe.
Deelight – Holzgraben 9. One of the most popular gay bars in the city.
Brotfabrik – Bachmannstr. 2-4 A very innovative venue featuring live and disco music from all over the world. Salsa. African and Asian music are popular. There is also a Spanish restaurant and a cafe on site.
Cooky’s – Am Salzhaus 4. This is the most popular and well-known disco in Frankfurt. Popular with the young locals as it features dance and chart music.

| Frankfurt is famous for its Apfelwein (hard cider) Bottles can be obtained from any grocery store but for a more enduring souvenir go to Frankfurter Dippemarkt where you can buy Bembel pitchers and glasses that are part of the Apfelwein tradition |
