Cathedrale St Pierre - Found at the eastern edge of the old town. Some of the stained glass dates from the twelfth century, notably the Crucifixion in the central window of the apse. The choir stalls are full of characteristic medieval detail: a coquettish Mary and Child; a peasant killing a boar; the architect at work with his dividers; and a baker with a basket of loaves.
Musee St Croix - Accessible from 3 bis, rue Jean Jaures. This museum, built on the site of the old abbey of St Croix, has a fine-arts section devoted mainly to painting, mainly 16th and 17th century Flemish art and 16th to 18th century Dutch paintings. A separate archaeological section documents the history of Poitou, from prehistoric times to the Gallo-Roman era, the Renaissance, and up to the end of the 19th century.
Eglise Ste Radegonde - Located at Place St Radegonde. This 11th century structure in the eastern section of Poitiers commemorates the patroness of Poitiers, Radegonde, and was a favorite place of pilgrimage in times gone by. Her black marble sarcophagus is found in the crypt. |
