| This area has a rich history of religion and Byzantine influence dating back to the 7th century - when the islands were captured and governed by officials of emperor Heraclius. Brac, the island on which the town Bol is situated, was the site of villas built by wealthy people wanting to escape villianous Avars. In later years villagers had to survive plundering by pirates and Turks during the dark ages.A more gentle age introduced the building of monasteries and churches. |
