| RUNAWAY BAY LOCAL HISTORY |

Situated on Jamaica's northeast coast, 5 miles (8km) east of Discovery Bay, where Columbus is said to have first landed on the island, one finds the beautiful and exclusive resort area called Runaway Bay. Situated to the west of Ocho Rios, Runaway Bay has great historical interest, as it is believed to be where Spanish forces fled Jamaica for Cuba after the decisive battle with the British in 1658.
The Runaway Bay Caves and Green Grotto, just outside the resort, are thought to have been the hiding places for the retreating Spanish. It is more secluded than Ocho Rios, and without the vendors or cruise-ship arrivals. Basically this is no real town; its mainly just a beachfront strip of hotels. |

Runaway Bay is home to lots of hotels but does not have an overcrowded feel. The primary travel attractions are the Runaway Bay and Green Grotto Caves.
The Runaway Bay Caves - miles of passages in these caves are believed to have been hideouts for pirates, runaway slaves and the Spanish colonists who were being pursued by the English after the British invasion of the island. The caverns have extraordinary stalactites and stalagmites.
Green Grotto Caves - an eerie experience for those who take a boat trip across a deep underground pool to view the marvellous rock formations and caves that drop more than 100 feet.
Columbus Park - The location where Columbus first set foot in Jamaica with an open-air museum.
Martha Brae River - rafting down the river.
Blue Mountains - take a tour here or utilize the excellent golf, polo and horseback-riding facilities nearby.

Circle B Farm - Take a tour to see the ruins of the island’s first sugar mill. |
