Santo Domingo - This is the capital city of the Dominican Republic, and is a vibrant; exciting; and interesting Caribbean city with more to do and than you can manage during your stay. There are many museums containing everything from indigenous and colonial history to amber. The city also has the oldest extant cathedral in the Americas, the Catedral Primada de America. Santo Domingo also has an excellent nightlife, with many bars and night clubs to keep you entertained after you've done your share of sightseeing.

Cabarete - This is a holiday maker's paradise with it's beautiful bay, which is considered to be the world's best for windsurfing. The picture perfect white-sand beaches are perfect for having fun in the sun. The town also has an outstanding nightlife, with numerous bars and nightclubs offering many excellent party venues. This is the place to go if you want to take up some watersports, with instruction and equipment available for hire.

Santiago - This is the Republic's second city and officialy is called Santiago de los Caballeros. Santiago has a thriving industrial sector and one of the best universities in the country, it is also the commercial centre of the Valle del Cibao. This is one of the more relaxed and laid back city in the Dominican Republic, and is a great place to get away from all the other more hectic tourism orientated places.

Sousa - This is another one of the outstanding beach towns in the Republic, with wide sandy shores and plenty palm trees. The town is still in the early stages of development and has a less modernized feel to it. Apart from the beaches and the sea, the town offers an excellent dining and nightlife experience with many great restaurants and lively nightclubs.


GREAT OUTDOORS Add your great outdoor
Parques Nacionales Armando Bermudez - This national park was established in 1958 and attracts hikers from around the world. The mountains found here are the source of 12 of the Republic's major rivers, including the white water Rio Yaque del Norte. There are many outdoor activities on offer at the park, including rappelling; canyoning; hiking; and campping. The park is home to some of the most spectacular scenery of the Caribbean.


MOVING AROUND Add your opinion
There is only one airline that services destinations in the Republic, Air Santo Domingo. It is very safe and reliable, the airfare costs around $50 to most destinations throughout the country.

Busses are the preffered method of transport, they're cheap; convenient; and if you use Metro Bus or Carib Tours, very comfortable. Qua-quas are smaller and less comfortable buses, which are favoured by the locals. The fares generaly are below $2.

Car rental is relatively expensive, it costs around $50 per day plus $10 for insurance. REnting a motorcycle is a better idea and more fun. You'll pay around $16 per day, and they can access places cars and buses can't reach.


NATIONAL FESTIVALS & HOLIDAYS Add your favourite festival
Independence Day (27 February) - This is one of the biggest holidays in the Republic and is celebrated all over the country with carnivals and a whole host of other festivities.

Rrestoration Day (15 August) - This is another important date on the Republic's events calendar and is also celebrated with carnivals and festivities all over the country.

Cultural Festival (June) - This week long festival is one of the biggest in the Caribbean, with jazz; blues; merengue; and folk concerts held throughout the town. It attracts many of the world's top musicians.
