PHUKET LOCAL HISTORY
Built near the highway on the way to the Airport, the Heroine's Monument, pays tribute to two very important figures in Phuket's history. In 1785 A.D the island was attacked by the Burmese, this was not the best time to be attacked as the Govenor of Phuket had just died. In desperation, his widow Chan and her sister Mook decided to fool the Burmese by dressing women in mens clothing and stationing them on the city walls. This worked and the Burmese troops withdrew.

The Burmese again attackd forty years later destroying Thalang (previously the capital of Phuket) and the inhabitants left to settle on the mainland. After another twenty years King Rama III rebuilt Thalang, discovered Tin deposits on the island and founded the new capital city, Phuket Town.
