| Djerba has had a similar history to Tunisia in general as it has certainly been popular with the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandels, Byzantines, Arabs, Norman, Italians, French and the Spanish. Houmt-Souk – The capital of the “island of palms” is picturesque with many Souks (markets) of shops overflowing with carpets, copper and local crafts. Have an enjoyable time wandering through the narrow streets and alleyways.
Mosque at Djerba – This 500 year old Mosque built in typical Arabic style and beautifully situated by the sea and surrounded by palm trees is worth looking around the village here Guellala and its magic camels. (Leave you guessing on that one)
Ghriba Synagogue – One of the few surviving synagogues in North Africa is housed in an exquisite building and is still used by the small Jewish community. Lag B’Omer in May marks the time of pilgrimage here for many Jews. |

El Malouf Tunisian Restaurant – If you feel like genuine Tunisian and Mediterranean cuisine and don’t mind splashing out a bit, then this restaurant based at the Movenpick Hotel is for you.
Haroun – Located in the capital this restaurant is well established and serves mostly local cuisine and has a large and varied menu. Dress fairly smart here.
Le Pirate – Zarzis is where you’ll find this very popular eatery. As the name suggests French food is the speciality here, home made and hearty so make sure you come here hungry me hearties! |
