Fes is the oldest city in Morocco and is divided into two parts, a commercial centre and a religious centre. New Fes was built in the 14th century, so you can imagine how old Old Fes is. This city was founded in the 9th century.
Most of the population of Fes lives in the Medina city instead of the Ville Nouvelle, which is the more modern of the two, and feels more like a European city. Fes is no longer the capital of Morocco, nor is it the biggest city or the most important. This city is more immersed in the history of Morocco.

Zaouia Moulay Idriss – Located at 8624 Rumble, Fes. The Zaouia Moulay Idriss is a shrine, which houses the remains of Moulay Idriss II, who is the founder of Morocco and Fes. His Zaouia is one of the holiest buildings in all of Fes, and is enclosed in the depths of the old city. Non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the building, but you can catch a glimpse inside as see the saint’s tomb, where devoted groups of women burn candles and incense and make offerings.
The Tanneries – Located at Souq Dabbaghin, Fes, close to the Karaouine Mosque. Tanneries Quarter is a place not to be missed, but it is advisable that only those with strong stomachs do go. The Tanneries is where leather is tanned and dyed and has been the same for hundreds of years. Climb up to one of the terraces, which belong to the surrounding leather shops and look down over the tanners’ yard, honeycombed with vats of dye and piled with skins. There is no need to pay, but it is expected that you take a look around the shop afterwards. The smell is bad, so you might consider taking a batch of mint to hold under your nose while you are there. The reason for this is because guano and pigeon droppings are used as part of the curing process.
Dar Barth Museum – Located near the Bab Boujeloud, outside the entrance to the old town, Fes. There are a large collection of arts and handicrafts on display. The museum can be found in a late 19th century palace, which was built by Sultan Moulay al-Hassan I. The gardens surrounding the museum are a great place to relax. The museum is open Wednesday to Monday and is closed between noon and 2:30.

Tagine – This Moroccan meal is made from spicy meat and vegetables, which have been simmered together for hours in a conical clay pot, and is one of the best known Moroccan meals.
Couscous – This meal is made from semolina grains and steamed in a colander-like dish referred to as a couscoussiere and is the staple food for the Moroccan population.
Kaliya – This Moroccan meal is a popular Berber contribution to the Moroccan cuisine. Kaliya is a combination of lab, tomatoes, bell peppers and onion and is served with couscous or bread.
Besara – Besara is a thick glop (soup) made from peas and olive oil and is a traditional breakfast in Morocco.

Restaurant Zagora – Located at The Boul. Mohammed V number 5, Fes. If you are looking for a good place to eat, then head no further than Restaurant Zagora. This is definitely the restaurant to visit if you are hungry. The food is good, whether you want Moroccan or French. There is always a buzz in the place, and packed with locals and many tourists. The staffs at Restaurant Zagora is the friendliest, and if you choose to frequent the establishment more than once, the waiters will start calling you brother or sister.
Restaurant el-Fassia – Located in the Old City, Fes. Restaurant el-Fassia is one the better restaurants in Fes. The food is spectacular, but a bit on the expensive side considering all the other restaurants in Morocco. What will you be paying back home for the same meal is all you need to ask yourself when you look at the prices at this exquisite restaurant.
Bab Boujeloud – Located in Fes. Bab Boujeloud is not just a restaurant; it is a whole area where you can enjoy some of the most exquisite meals in Morocco. They are relatively cheap, but don’t stay open to late. This area is something you need to experience and a great way to wonder around Fes.

Café Floria – Located at Av. Hassan II, Fes. Café Floria is a popular hangout for those who enjoy a relaxing atmosphere. This is a great place to come and enjoy an evening with some friends. The croissants are excellent.
Es Saada – Located at Av. Es Slaoui, Fes. Es Saada is a lively establishment, with great service and friendly staff. Their beer is reasonably priced and you will really have a blast here.
Café de la Rennaissance – Located at Place Mohammed V. Café de la Rennaissance was a former Foreign Legion hangout, but still has a great atmosphere and friendly staff. Café de la Rennaissance is the perfect place to come and unwind after a busy day.

Au Petit Bazaar de Bon Accueil – Located at 35 Talaa Sghira, Fes. At Au Petit Bazaar de Bon Accueil you will find lots of good textiles, rugs and antiques. This store is not cheap. You need to ask to go upstairs to see the really good stuff, downstairs are a great new gift items.
Hamid’s Carpet Shop – Located at Cherblyenne, Fes-el-Bali, Fes. This little store sells rugs from all over Morocco. There are some rare and valuable pieces, which are available. Hamid, who owns the shop and his brother, show interested visitors some of the really impressive pieces without the pressure that you get from other carpet shops.
Les Mysteres de Fes – Located at 53 Derb Bin Lemssari, Sidi Moussa, Guerniz, Fes. This store sells outstanding pieces of jewelry, beautiful antiques and handmade objects. This is definitely the store to go to for that gift for someone special.

Arms Museum of the Borj Nord – This museum is housed in a 16th century fortress and has a large collection of antique arms. It seems that all the boys out there, no matter their age love this museum. There are all sorts of arms to see.
If you aren’t interested in the weapons, the building is something to be appreciated and there are wonderful views of the Medina. |
