Fort Jesus – Nkrumah Rd in the old town, the fort was built in the 17th century to defend the position for Portugal, didn’t work though and you will find much of interest on a walk around the site, including a well set out museum containing artifacts from the battles over the fort. Just be careful of the many “guides”who tend to be persistent.
Old Town – While you are in the area have a leisurely stroll around the town and you will notice the interesting architecture and predominantly Muslim influence on the buildings. Some of the places of interest to visit are Leven House (The old customs building), The old law courts and the Ndia Kuu (Great Way) one of Mombassa’s original old roads.
Kizingo – This district lies on the southern side of the island by the lighthouse. Many large colonial style buildings line the streets and a trip to Fort St Joseph which can be reached via a path through the Mombassa Golf Club. The fort was also built by the Portuguese and is in good condition. |

Recoda – On Nyeri St in the old town and serves good wholesome African food and some Indian curries. Only open in the evenings and perfect for the budget traveler. Decor is basic and you should meet the locals here.
Blue Room Restaurant – Haile Salasse Rd, A cafe more than a restaurant, but very friendly with tasty fare on the menu, but not too imaginative. Popular with the locals and well established.
Le Bistro – On the main drag of Moi Ave with an extensive menu from pizza to fresh fish and the chef here has used a bit of imagination to beef up ordinary dishes. Decor is shabby/chique, but the food is worth it. Sit on one of the outside tables and people watch African style.
Capri Restaurant – Nkrumah Rd is where you will find this sophisticated Italian restaurant. Well known for it’s fabulous food especially the seafood, but you might have to wait for service, so its great for a romantic liaison. |

Sky Bar/Restaurant – Centrally located in the town, this disco is one of the places to be seen. The lively DJs play mostly Reggae and you’ll have fun dancing on the spacious dance floor, well stocked bar adds to your enjoyment.
Casablanca Club – This disco/bar is popular with visitors and locals and is on 2 levels with a courtyard bar downstairs and the disco plus another bar upstairs. Nice decor and loud mixed music has the crowds rocking till the early hours.
International Casino – Oceanic Hotel on Lighthouse Rd, The place for a small flutter. Free entrance and a good selection of tables playing Blackjack and roulette among other games as well as the one-arm bandits. There is a bar and restaurant in the same hotel.
Rainbow House Nightclub – Moi Ave is the home of this disco and Reggae club which has plenty going for it, just ask the locals who flock here late at night, though there a fair amount of tourists around. |

Labeka – The place for African curios on Moi Ave with a good selection of items from which to choose, remember to haggle. You may possibly get a better quality item here than on the streets.
Mckinnon Market – Digo Road is the centre of this sprawling market named after a former British administrator. The market sells all sorts including fruit and veg, jewelery, arts and crafts, baskets and brightly coloured cloth known as Kikoi and Kangas, which are associated with East Africa.
Moi and Kenyatta Aves – Most of the formal city type shops are located on these rather uninspiring streets. Remember that you are going to stand out as a tourist and you may be hassled. There is a lot of poverty here so don’t dress up wearing big jewelry to tempt the would be thief. |
