Masai Mara National Reserve – In a country blessed with an abundance of wildlife and nature reserves, this is the most popular for the visitor. Covering an area of 320 square kilometres and joining the Serengeti it’s vast plains are teeming with Lions, Elephant, Buffalo, Hippo, Zebra and Antelope. Named after the tribe that populate the area, who are allowed to hunt there, but do not bring your firearms, as they won’t look too kindly on that.
Lamu Island – Located at the northern end of the coast, this island paradise can be reached by Dhow (traditional boat) from the mainland. The Arabic influence is reflected in the islands architecture and is still populated mostly by Muslims. The narrow streets do not allow car access so there aren’t any. There are a couple of museums, which give a good insight into the islands history and culture. Check the Donkey haven, sort of like an old age home for donkeys. Haven’t mentioned the beaches and coral, the word Paradise sums it all up.
Nairobi – The capital is a busy African city and downtown is easy to walk and contains some interesting museums. There is a lot of unemployment so the locals can get annoying or even mug you so be careful especially at night.
Mombasa – Kenya’s port on the east African coast is extremely humid in the summer and has a colourful history. The old town is full of Arabic influence as old wooden shops and ornate balconies are common sights. Fort Jesus lies at the harbour entrance and has been well fought over since the Portuguese built it in 1593.

Amboseli National Park – A massive 392 sq km in northern Kenya with views of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania (Africa’s Highest Peak). The best way to see the park is by plane with the music from the film “Out of Africa” in the background. Herds of Elephant, Wildebeest or Antelope can always be seen. You can’t go to Africa without going on safari and this is a wonderful place to partake.
Kakamega Forest Reserve – Tropical Rainforest in the western part of the country. A hike through the many trails will be richly rewarded with sightings of exotic birdlife and many species of monkeys on the treetops. Guides are available and there is good accommodation in the park.
Camel Safaris – For an unforgettable experience in some of the National parks (check out availability). The perfect way to get up close and personal with the wildlife.
Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site – Located at Nakuru 200 km from Nairobi. These sites were discovered in 1937 and are a bit of a mystery with 3 different settlements dating back a few thousand years. An interesting collection of artefacts was dug up here.

Plane – All the parks are well connected with airstrips, there are many small companies offering trips. Doubles up as a bit of a Safari as well.
Train – Runs on time between Nairobi and Mombasa, although slow and fairly expensive.
Bus/Matatu (minibus) – A good network of buses reach all areas of the country, but try to avoid the matatus as the driving leaves a lot to be desired and are well known for their accident rate.
Car – The roads aren’t the greatest and drives can be very long. Car hire is expensive here.
Taxi – Shared taxi is usually the cheapest option, but you sometimes have to take a chance on the standard of driving.
Boat – Take a traditional dhow trip up the coast from Mombasa to Lamu stopping at the many beach resorts along the way.
