TOP DESTINATIONS Add your favourite destination
River Gambia National Park - Take a boat trip from Georgetown downriver edged with mangroves, bypassing the chimp rehabilitation islands. These are chimps confiscated from illegal traders and are being resettled here. Unfortunately they have revenge on their minds and may attack should you get within their range so beware of getting close! Enjoy the sensation of drifting down the river and the likelyhood of monkey, hippo and crocodile sightings.

Abuko Nature reserve - Situated south east of Serekunda is this garden of eden of birds, bring your binoculars and birdbook to identify the more than 270 species of birds. Also worth visiting is the animal orphanage (aaaawwww!) and the well stocked crocodile pools-(smile!). Take a forest walk and spot some of the shy inhabitants of the forest such as bushbaby, duiker and porcupine. The spying eyes watching you from the undergrowth may be the monkeys, of which there are 3 species in the area.

Basse Santa Su - East Gambia- the lively hub of the eastern area. Experience the real heart of Gambia- away from the eurocentric west coast. Visit the museum and restaurant situated in an old converted colonial warehouse and bargain for souvenirs at one of the many stalls on market day. Get some of the rich dust of Africa on your feet!

WHEN TO GO Add your opinion
To avoid the rain go between December and February, but if you would rather take the rain and avoid the crowds then May to September may suit you.

MOVING AROUND Add your opinion
Due to the size and geography of the country there are two main routes- one on the north Gambia river bank and, naturally, one on the south bank. The lifeblood of African transport, the minibus taxi, makes its appearance as a bush taxi service that goes anywhere that people need to go, with the possibility of a few interesting detours along the way!

There is also a public bus transport service but expect these to chiefly stick to the main routes. For the adventurous the country can be explored on bicycle, the country is relatively flat and that way you can see and experience so much more. Certain areas can also be reached by boat. There is no railway service.
