Cairo – One of the world’s largest cities, with a population of around 10 million, a classic museum and of course The Sphynx and the Pyramids. The bustling lively exotic city with its blaring car horns and interesting markets is the starting point for Egypt.
Cruise the Nile – The lifeline of Egypt is The Nile, and most of the countries population lives on either side of it. Merely a day trip or all the way to Luxor is a “must do”. You will pass many ancient monuments and villages that have changed little in thousands of years.
Luxor – Like a massive museum in the open, plenty to see for the history buff, like the well-preserved Karnak Temple with its massive columns and hieroglyphics and wall paintings. Across the Nile go to the Valley of the Kings, where the ancient kings were entombed. Don’t leave Egypt without going there.

Alexandria – Egypt’s second city on the north coast is the port and has wonderful and undeveloped Mediterranean beaches amongst these are Stanley and a bit further east is Montazah and Maamoura. Abu Qir is a small fishing town where one can fish, swim, sunbathe and relax at the local cafes. To the west are Agami and Hannoville.
Hurghada – On the more popular Red Sea coast, you will find this holiday town. Miles of stunning beaches, warm azure blue water, tons of coral and colourful aquatic life make this a sun worshippers paradise. Sharm El Naga about 30km to the south is to be recommended for its isolation and coral.
Sharm El Sheikh – Located at the tip of the Sinai land mass that separates the Gulf of Aqaba and Suez. Just a short way from this tourist Mecca is Ras Mohammed, which is amongst the best coral reefs in the world. The colours of the fish and coral mesmerize one here. Try a day trip from here inland to St Katherine’s Monastery atop Mount Sinai.

| In the cities there is a good transport system on the buses or shared taxis and an excellent train line connecting north to south. Egypt is tourist wise and car hire is available most places, but I wouldn’t navigate Cairo in one. Ferries ply the Red Sea coastal towns. Overland coaches are quite good and cheap. |
